During the time that the baby is in the care unit, the parents are encouraged by the staff to have as much hands on time with their baby as possible.

The mother may breastfeed the child while he or she is in the care unit. Not only can you have visitation hours with your child, if you have and older child they can go in the babysitting area for time being.

Usually during this time the new borns spend all of their time with their mother in the hospital, While they are seen every day by the newborn healthcare team, which includes an attending physician, nurse practitioner, or a resident physician.<br>Skin to skin is used a lot at such a young age. This is an important and fast acting way to cure the baby.

Out of the 49 bed units, nurses care for around 900 new borns each year. Only highly specialized nurses are allowed in these units.

Studies have shown that premature babies whom are ill, do better in quiet "womb like" rooms. The private rooms allow the parents to take care of their own child.

Many babies relied on the mother to feed them and once they are born, they do not know how to care for themselves. This is why there are intensive care units in the NICU. Caring for the baby to neuture it back to health.
