What do maker projects look like in each subject area?

What do maker projects look like in each subject area? | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it
Recently a friend of mine said, “When I think of makerspaces, I don’t think of history classes. I picture areas where kids are playing with toys and stuff.”

This comment resonated with my own experience. The first time I heard about makerspaces, I thought, “That’s awesome and I’d love to have something like that, but I teach social studies.” I had a mental block that kept me from seeing the bigger picture around makerspaces.

So, I started with the most natural tie-in. We did an economics unit where students used design thinking to build a product. After redesigning the space, I realized something:

A makerspace isn’t just about engineering.

Free Technology for Teachers: Photo Mapo for Archiving Summer (and other things) | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it

"While gathering resources to share with campus teachers, I stumbled upon thePhoto Mapo app and quickly added it to my list of tools for summer archival. The intent was to provide a repository of tools and applications that educators could utilize in the midst of their staycations and vacations that could also be extended to the classroom. Photo Mapo is a FREE app that does just that. Very useful for fieldtrips and site -based learning activities - the app allows you to record the location, a map, a photo and notes about the location in a single "postcard" style image.  Geological survey, environmental outings, etc could all be recorded with this innovative, yet very simple application.

How To Writing: App Smashing With A Publishing Menu - Zig Zag Tech

How To Writing: App Smashing With A Publishing Menu - Zig Zag Tech | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it
After our collaborative How To writing project, everyone was quick to get started on their own “expert” stories. Making lists of things we’re experts at helps generate ideas, then the stories start to flow!

We’ve published our writing several different ways this year, so I offered an idea menu of apps to publish with to my class. This is by no means a comprehensive list of tools. I just wanted to provide them a jumping off point to get started when they were ready to publish. Please feel free to download the menu here.

Two Great Periodic Tables of Educational iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Two Great Periodic Tables of Educational iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it

"Today as I was wading through my Twitter feeds I came across a link to the periodic table of iPad apps created by ICTEvangelist.Upon checking this work I learned that it is inspired by a relatively similar work done by Sean Junkins which I have featured in an earlier post in this blog. Different as they are, both of these periodic tables provide an interesting collection of educational iPad apps you could probably consider using with your students. These apps are arranged under different categories and each of these categories  has a unique colour code to help you identify apps belonging it. The labelling of the categories in these two periodic tables slightly differ from one another with ICTEvangelist tending to repurpose his work for UK-based educational settings."

Try Creating Comics to Get Students to Share Stories About Themselves - iPad Apps for School

Try Creating Comics to Get Students to Share Stories About Themselves - iPad Apps for School | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it

"I shared this idea on Free Technology for Teachers earlier today and I’m sharing it here to bring an iPad slant to it. At the beginning of the new school year it can take a while for new students to open up to each other and to you. One way to get them to share stories about themselves is to have them put it into a fun comic story. Through creating comic stories you can have students share favorite stories from their summer vacations. In the process students learn how to use a new tool, practice developing storylines, and they let you in on a little bit of who they are as people. Here are three iPad apps that I like to use to create comic stories."

Adobe Voice: A Powerful Storytelling App - Class Tech Tips

Adobe Voice: A Powerful Storytelling App - Class Tech Tips | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it

#"Storytelling is a powerful way to inspire students, build community and give children a voice.  There are a few great apps that help students of all ages write and tell their own stories (Shadow Puppet, Toontastic) and a new app that I absolutely love is Adobe Voice.  This free iPad app is very user friendly and makes the storytelling process simple for children young and old.  Kids can add pictures, text, and even choose from different icons to bring their stories to life.  Adobe Voice has an easy recording feature for students to add their voice as narration.  There is a music library and a selection of themes for users to pick out and include in their final product."

How to Create a Bibliography in Google Documents

How to Create a Bibliography in Google Documents | Nederlands HP | Scoop.it

Chris Eller's curator insight, April 29, 2014 5:17 PM

As a fan of Google Docs, I am still frustrated at its lack of features...such as creating a bibliography. All of the tools available (Papers, Sente, etc.) integrate well with Microsoft Word. Not so with Google Docs. Perhaps we are turning a corner with the addition of add-ons like EasyBib. Still a long ways from the powerful integration of Papers and Word.
