Poland, long an economic success story, losing momentum

Poland, long an economic success story, losing momentum | NATO | Scoop.it
WARSAW, Poland — Michal Ruminski was 6 when his father took him through a local supermarket here. The store shelves were empty, except for some bottles of vinegar, but that was precisely the point.
Matthias Verbergt's insight:

"Long a key NATO member, Poland has been one of only a few allies that over the years has met or come close to the target of military spending of 2 percent of its overall economy. Given its location bordering politically volatile neighbors in Eastern Europe, Poland’s stable democratic government plays an influential role in less developed countries such as Ukraine and Belarus."

Barroso declines to comment on options for NATO top job | NATO | Scoop.it
Asked today (24 July) if he had plans to be the next NATO secretary-general,
Commission President José Manuel Barroso declined to comment.
Matthias Verbergt's insight:

Very insightful information on euractiv.com:

"The race for the job, which will become available next year, has already started, sources told EurActiv, with Belgian Defence Minister Pieter De Crem considered the favourite."

"NATO sources told EurActiv that the race for the next NATO chief had stared and that the most likely next secretary-general was De Crem. De Crem, a Flemish politician from the conservative CD&V party of Herman Van Rompuy, could secure the widest consensus possible."

"“Sikorski knows that he doesn’t stand a chance for the NATO job,” a source told EurActiv"

Second Chance? German Defense Minister Favored to Head NATO - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Second Chance? German Defense Minister Favored to Head NATO - SPIEGEL ONLINE | NATO | Scoop.it
Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière is having a tough time in Germany these days, but he may get a second chance in Brussels. SPIEGEL has learned he is a leading contender to become the next NATO secretary general.
Matthias Verbergt's insight:

"The United States would be uneasy with the choice of former Polish defense and current Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini is considered too close to Silvio Berlusconi to be widely acceptable -- and the fact that he is no longer in government is another possible strike against him."

Wer wird der neue König von Europa?

Wer wird der neue König von Europa? | NATO | Scoop.it

Matthias Verbergt's insight:

German newspaper Die Welt talks about possible candidates: Pieter De Crem (BEL) and Thomas de Maizière (GER)
