Hooters Unveils New Contemporary Restaurant Design

Atlanta, GA  (RestaurantNews.com)  Hooters of America, LLC today unveiled a fresh, completely remodeled look for its Hooters of Kirby restaurant location in Houston, Texas. With a new interior and exterior design featuring sleek and contemporary finishes and a more comfortable dining experience, the rebuild of this 20-year-old restaurant location will serve as a prototype for future Hooters locations.

This first-of-its-kind remodel will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 23 with a variety of festivities to showcase the new restaurant, including a ribbon-cutting event from 4-4:30 p.m. Central, a Sip ‘n See VIP party to follow, as well as food and drink specials and a customer iPad Mini giveaway. The recently appointed 2013 Hooters Girl of the Year Rachel Fashing will also sign autographs, along with Hooters Calendar Girls.

“Hooters is exceptionally proud to reveal this design concept, reinvigorating the look and feel of our traditional restaurants without losing the essence of our iconic brand that the world has loved for 30 years,” said Dave Henninger, chief marketing officer, Hooters of America. “Hooters is turning 30 this year, so it seems only fitting to refresh and modernize our restaurants during this milestone anniversary. Based on initial feedback from our local Hooters customers, they are celebrating this remodel as the ideal environment to kick-back and relax after work, get together to watch their favorite sports team and enjoy a delicious meal with their family.”

Express CEO expresses holiday caution | RetailingToday.com

Express CEO expresses holiday caution | RetailingToday.com | National Retail Brand News | Scoop.it

Specialty retailer Express said its same store sales for the third quarter ended October 27, declined 5% and profits declined to $17.4 million, or 20 cents a share, compared to $32.7 million, or 37 cents a share.

Total sales for the period declined 4% to $468.5 million and gross margins contracted to 32.3% of sales from 36.2% of sales the prior year. Expenses increased to 25.1% of sales form 23.6% of sales.

Company chairman and CEO Michael Weiss called the quarter challenging and disappointing, but said the retailer had identified issues impacting its performance and begun executing a plan to rectify the situation.

"To that end, we re-balanced our sweater assortment, introduced entry price point fashion items in key categories, and began to set and communicate clearer pricing and promotional strategies for our customers," Weiss said. "

Those actions position the company well for the future – although low single digit negative comps are forecast for the fourth quarter - while it also continues to focus on four growth areas, according to Weiss.

"We saw continued positive momentum in our men's business, experienced double digit growth in e-commerce sales versus the prior year, and achieved our store expansion goals with the opening of eight new stores, including one in Canada," Weiss said. "In addition, we continued our international expansion with the opening of four additional franchise stores in the Middle East."

The clearer promotional messaging the company implemented in the third quarter was said to contributed to a record Black Friday performance that exceeded the company’s expectations. However, Weiss expressed reservations about the holiday season.

"We remain cautious on the overall performance of the fourth quarter given that the majority of the holiday season lies ahead," Weiss said. "We expect to make sequential improvement as our corrective measures get further underway.

We remain confident in, and committed to, our strategies and four pillars of growth, which we believe position us for improved results over the long term."

Express expects to end the year with a total of 625 locations following the opening of 23 U.S. stores and five Canadian stores offset by the closure of 12 stores.

NRF warns retailers of possible trouble ahead | RetailingToday.com

RetailingToday.com

Construction Network's insight:
NRF warns retailers of possible trouble ahead January 15, 2013 | By Alaric Dearment

The National Retail Federation said that holiday retail sales increased 3% over the year before, to $579.8 billion. December retail sales increased 0.8% seasonally adjusted from November and 2.1% unadjusted year over year. Nevertheless, the 3% increase was still below the NRF's projected 4.1% growth. Meanwhile, nonstore holiday sales grew 11.1%.

"For over six months, we've been saying that the fiscal cliff and economic uncertainty could impact holiday sales," NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said. "As the number shows, these issues had a visible impact on consumer spending this holiday season. We can't expect consumers to continue to carry the burden of growing our economy — Washington must put political differences aside and do what it takes to get our country growing again and Americans back to work."

But retail sales growth is "highly unsustainable" due to tax-related pressure on income, spending and weather-related issues in the next few months, Guggenheim Securities analyst John Heinbockel wrote.

December retail sales figures released by the Department of Commerce — which showed total retail and food services sales but excluded products like automobiles, restaurants and gas stations — showed a 0.5% seasonally adjusted increase and a 4.7% year-over-year adjusted increase. General merchandise stores' seasonally adjusted sales were unchanged month to month and decreased unadjusted 3.4% year over year, while health and personal care stores' seasonally adjusted month-to-month sales increased 1.4% as unadjusted year-to-year sales decreased 0.7%.

"While nonstore retailers increased a hearty 11% this December, total December sales could not make up for shortfalls in certain categories like electronics," NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz said. "Heading into 2013, consumers could continue to think twice about their discretionary purchases as they face decreases in their paychecks and other concerns with their household budgets."

JCP begins 12 days of brand building

JCP begins 12 days of brand building | National Retail Brand News | Scoop.it

Abysmal sales at J.C. Penney haven’t deterred the company from pursuing a series of unique cause marketing activities around a potential new holiday tradition focused on giving back.

Tuesday marks the first ever #GivingTuesday, a social media initiative J.C. Penney help organize that follows on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday with the intention of inspiring Americans to join in acts of giving and celebrate the country’s tradition of generosity. J.C. Penney is doing its part on Tuesday when it kicks of a 12 days of giving campaign in New York’s Bryant Park with a free performance by popular recording artist John Legend and free ice skating and hot chocolate.

"As a company founded on the Golden Rule, J.C. Penney has a strong legacy of giving back. As we embark on our exciting transformation, we realize becoming America's favorite store isn't just about the shopping experience we offer our customers – it's also about what we do to support the communities in which we live and work," said Miki Woodard, the company’s president and vice president of philanthropy. "The holidays are a time of generosity and giving and we look forward to sharing this holiday spirit through our Holiday Giving Tour by surprising America with acts of generosity across the country."

The surprising and clever acts will unfold over the coming days and should generate considerable favorable publicity for a company whose transformational strategy has yet to produce favorable results. For example, after the Legend performance in New York, it is on to Langhorne, Pa., where lumberjacks will distribute free firewood outside a store at the Oxord Valley Mall. Then it is on to Orlando where J.C. Penney will replace toll booth attendants with Santas and will match the tolls paid with donations to the Salvation Army.

In Knoxville, Tn., a miniature J.C. Penney-branded blimp will drop small gifts to unsuspecting pedestrians and the following day in Dallas the company will make snow to create sledding opportunities at Flagpole Hill park. Continuing the winter theme in another warm weather city, the parking lot of a store at New Orleans’ Oakwood Shopping Center will be turned into a skating rink.

Residents of Chicago will be treated to a Santa handing out J.C. Penney cashmere scarves, hats and other items. From there, the company heads west and in the town of Alamosa, Co., a ceremony will be held to light a Rockefeller Center-sized Christmas tree. In nearby Kemmerer, Wy., J.C. Penney will take over local car wash to provide free car washes by Santas while elves dispense hot beverages, $10 gift cards and breakfast burritos.

In Portland, residents will have an opportunity to receive one of hundreds of poinsettias used by a local artist earlier in the day to create something called a pointillism portrait. In Phoenix, a team of elves will offer free valet parking at J.C. Penney’s Paradise Valley stores. The Giving Tour concludes in grand fashion outside a store at the Westfield Culver City mall when recording artist Blake Shelton provides an acoustic holiday performance.

Beyond the 12 day tour, J.C. Penney said its stores would also be providing acts of generosity to customers throughout the holiday season by distributing collectible holiday buttons featuring one of 50 classic designs and holiday expressions. A unique code on the back of each button offers customers a chance to win one of millions of gifts including vacations, tickets to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, J.C. Penney merchandise and gift cards. In addition, for each button redeemed on November 27 at www.jcp.com/christmas the company will donate one dollar to the Salvation Army up to $100,000.
