The Department of Higher Education and Training every year engages in several international scholarship partnerships to provide opportunities for South Africans to study abroad on fully-funded scholarships at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The department facilitates the nomination process for several of the scholarships which are open to all South African citizens with a strong academic record.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize is expected to promulgate new policy to re-establish the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA) after consulting with the National Skills Authority. The primary functions of the NSA are to advise the minister on matters of skills development in accordance with the Skills Development Act. A review of the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training and other relevant reports will form the basis for the new strategy.
