Acquiring another company is a common move for larger businesses that want to expand their own operations, reduce the likelihood of competition and adopt new skills or resources that they otherwise would not possess. However, acquisition also has its downsides, especially when it comes to costs and the price of combing two similar companies. Acquisition is typically associated with leveraged buyouts and forced sales instead of more benign mergers, which may also create goodwill issues for a company.

I think it is good that iTunes is giving the consumer an option and isn't requiring them to purchase the higher costing songs.

I feel it's technology like this that the industry believes will help boost sales.  What has hurt the industry through digital advancement can also promote it.

Tanner Samp's curator insight, January 19, 2014 7:59 PM

iTunes is currently offering an update that allows users with digital music files to down convert from the traditional 256 or 320 kbps. I see how this may allow users to fit a higher quanity of music onto their devices, but it sacrifices quality. This is another example of technology supporting the "quantity over quality" mentality. Though this is convenient, I don't belive this is a push in the right direction for quality music. Overall, this is not the solution the music industry needs to sell more music.
