The Marches, Italy | Best wine routes

The Marches, Italy | Best wine routes | My Music & Wine & Art Gallery | Scoop.it

The Marches (Marche) has a beautiful and diverse landscape of mountains, hills and rivers. The capital is Ancona and has a port through which the city also has much importance. You will find no great historical treasures or exclusive restaurants.
Grape varieties
The most common white grape varieties are Verdicchio, Trebbiano, Malvasia and some local varieties. Genakat Wines of the Verdicchio are fresh and crisp, but with a lot of character. The production ratio of red vs white is 50/50. For red wines the grape Montepulciano, Sangiovese and also some local grape varieties are being used.
DOCG and DOC's
• DOCG Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, the Vernaccia which is used in this wine is the Vernaccia nera (a blue grape). The 'ordinary' Vernaccia is in fact a white grape. The Serrapetrona is a red sparkling wine with a smooth bubbly foam. There is both a sweet and a dry version.
• Conero DOCG, the Monte Conero is located near the city of Ancona. The vineyards are mainly planted with Montepulciano. It is a slate soil. Good red wines with a pleasant spicy scent and taste are being produced at this place.
• DOC Rosso Conero, on the same mountain as the DOCG but gives a lighter variant of the red wine. Again, the main Montepulciano grape is the most important grape variety here.
• Rosso Piceno DOC, the DOC is the most important for the red wine. It is a solid, full, dry wine. [...]

Danielle M. Villegas's curator insight, June 16, 2014 11:03 AM

This is an interesting little tidbit that came to me by way of one of my former grad school classmates. I forget the percentage that's been quoted to me in the past (I feel like I heard it from Scott Abel), but people who speak English natively or as a second language fluently don't make up the majority of all languages spoken, yet the language of the Internet is often thought to be English.  The map in this article shows an interesting dynamic. I'd be curious to see what it looks like in other regions of the world, especially near countries that are either UK Commonwealth countries or former British colonies.
