This is what happens to your brain and body when you check your smartphone before bed - Business Insider | Interesting English | Scoop.it
Staring at screens right before sleep turns out to be a lot worse than previously thought. Dr. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA Sch
Sophia Khan's insight:

Interesting very short talk on why we should turn off screens before bed. Try listening for the main ideas, then transcribing the whole thing (just over 2 mins), then analysing pron features or looking for new vocab/structures. Are YOU addicted to your smart phone?

How to run a company with (almost) no rules

How to run a company with (almost) no rules | Interesting English | Scoop.it
What if your job didn’t control your life? Brazilian CEO Ricardo Semler practices a radical form of corporate democracy, rethinking everything from board meetings to how workers report their vacation days (they don’t have to). It’s a vision that rewards the wisdom of workers, promotes work-life balance — and leads to some deep insight on what work, and life, is really all about. Bonus question: What if schools were like this too?
Sophia Khan's insight:

TED talks are great to listen to - start a collection of your favourites and really pay attention to the ideas, language and pronunciation packed inside. There is usually a transcript available, as for this very inspiring and thought-provoking talk on thinking differently to teach and work guided by principles of wisdom, happiness and freedom. Another favourite of mine is writer and essayist Pico Iyer on 'Where is home?' (http://www.ted.com/talks/pico_iyer_where_is_home?language=en). Enjoy.

▶ Jimmy Fallon Blew a Chance to Date Nicole Kidman - YouTube | Interesting English | Scoop.it
Jimmy Fallon and Nicole Kidman have two very different embarrassing memories of the afternoon they first met. Subscribe NOW to The Tonight Show Starring Jimm...
Sophia Khan's insight:

It's always worth listening to a good story! Watch 0.00-3.00 to find out how popular TV chat show host and comedian Jimmy Fallon blew a chance to date Nicole Kidman. For teachers, this could be fun to do as a listening with a follow-up role-play focusing on emotions and intonation. It's also excellent for looking at the language we naturally use in anecdotes (so he goes…, so I'm like…., present tenses for immediacy etc.)

How Cartoons Help You Learn Another Language | Francis Tapon | Big Think

How Cartoons Help You Learn Another Language | Francis Tapon | Big Think | Interesting English | Scoop.it

Via TeachingEnglish
Sophia Khan's insight:

This post is mis-titled - it's really about "little, interesting things you can do to learn a second language more effectively as an adult" - however, one of the tips *is* to "read children's books and comics" - though I would say for adults you would find Young Adult (YA) fiction more satisfying - and there are *amazing* "comics" out there these days - go browsing!

Serial

Serial | Interesting English | Scoop.it
A new podcast from the creators of This American Life. One story. Told week by week. Hosted by Sarah Koenig.
Sophia Khan's insight:

This 12-part podcast serial - called Serial - about a real 'cold-case' murder in the US and the *possible* miscarriage of justice that followed has gone viral, and won millions of listeners around the world. Upper-intermediate to advanced learners of English will probably find it just as fascinating - plus its great for listening to variety of accents,  idiomatic language, natural speech etc. Episode transcripts are available online via the This American Life website (e.g.: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/537/the-alibi) but you might have to hunt them down. I don't think all are available yet at the time of writing this.

25 classic novels for teenagers - Telegraph

25 classic novels for teenagers - Telegraph | Interesting English | Scoop.it
There are so many excellent novels being published aimed at Young Adults, but many of the classics are perfect, says Lorna Bradbury...
Sophia Khan's insight:

Just read. The books on this list might not be for you - they are still fairly 'classic', but teens like them for a reason - they have strong plots and great characters. However, I think more contemporary Young Adult (YA) fiction is particularly good for language learners, I mean things like the Hunger Games, The Fault in our Stars, Twilight etc. Find something you are interested in and JUST READ

Connector Diagnostic — English Exercises & Practice | Grammar Quizzes

Connector Diagnostic — English Exercises & Practice | Grammar Quizzes | Interesting English | Scoop.it
Sophia Khan's insight:

There's a lot more stuff out there in coursebooks, self-study books and online about 'tenses' than about other equally important areas of English grammar. 'Connectors' are one area that ESL speakers often feel uncertain about but which can easily make speaking and writing that bit more sophisticated. It's true that in speaking 'and', but' and 'so' can and do do most of the legwork - but it's not to say we don't use other connectors as well. And if you are doing any sort of academic or formal writing, getting these basics in place this is a must. Use the diagnostic quiz here to see what areas you could brush up on - and there is plenty more to explore on this site as well.

Sophia Khan's insight:

Humans of New York is a phenomenon, with millions of followers and thousands of comments every day. Brandon Stanton posts a picture of someone he meets in the street along with a snippet of their 'story'. It's always amazing and frequently makes me cry. Also the comments can be a revelation in conflicting viewpoints, kindness, meanness and lots of idiomatic and natural language. Follow.

Excellent site - real articles from the New Internationalist magazine (newint.org) in simplified (though not dumbed down) English. Perfect for those who want to read, but are more into current affairs than fiction, and a great stepping stone to further reading.
