Election code of conduct violations galore

PESHAWAR: The code of conduct issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan was violated by candidates and their supporters in majority of the constituencies in the provincial capital on Saturday. In total disregard of the code of conduct, supporters of political parties were seen canvassing for their respective candidates near polling stations and that they also hired vehicles for transporting voters to polling stations. The violations were seen more near rural polling stations compared to those in urban localities. Interestingly, there was no one in the filed to check these violations.

PML-N, BNP agree on seat adjustment in polls

Former Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif has once again conceded that removal of elected government of Akhtar Mengal in 1997 was a mistake.
“It was a good and happy chain when Sardar Akhtar Mengal formed a coalition government and there was mutual cooperation among all forces, including the Baloch and Pakhtuns,” the former Punjab chief minister said. “Unfortunately an incident took place removing the government of Sardar Akhtar Mengal,” he added. Talking to media after parleys with BNP President Sardar Akhtar Mengal at his residence, he said that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif had already regretted the government’s removal publicly. Sardar Akhtar Mengal claimed that the Establishment was trying to keep the BNP-M away from the general elections, saying unless the missing persons are recovered safely and immediately and those responsible for enforced disappearances are brought to justice, free, fair and transparent elections are not possible. The BNP president asked the government to “disarm its proxy gunmen” from all parts of Balochistan to ensure free and fair elections and to provide a level playing field to all the contestants in the elections.
Sardar Mengal termed Shahbaz Sharif’s visit to Balochistan and meeting with the local people at this important juncture a welcome move. “It demonstrated unity and integrity among the political and democratic forces,” he told the media. He said Balochistan has also been facing economic problems for the past ten years and the province is infested with terrorism, claiming that people in uniform are running death squads. “Who has permitted them to kill and insult innocent people,” Mengal asked.
He demanded that all the displaced people who were dislodged from their homes as a result of operations should be rehabilitated first and those responsible for their dislocation be brought to justice. Mengal said he had discussed seat-to-seat adjustment between PML-N and BNP in Balochistan and the PML-N had formed a committee for this purpose. He said that the BNP too would form a similar committee for seat adjustment with PML-N and other parties. Shahbaz Sharif was more categorical in his remarks, saying that if we participate in the elections and cooperate with each other, we can prevent undemocratic forces from staging a comeback. “The anti-democratic forces are trying to impose a defeat on the democratic forces to achieve their ulterior designs in this country,” Shahbaz said.
