Facebook : buys musical selfie startup Eyegroove and offers AudioShot, a shazam-style chatbot for FB messenger

Facebook buys ‘musical selfie’ startup Eyegroove

What is the business model for an app that helps people mash up music with photos or videos? Basically it’s getting bought by a bigger tech fish for the technology and/or team. The latest example is Eyegroove, an app launched in 2014 by Björk collaborator Scott Snibbe as “an Instagram for interactive music”, which has just been acquired by Facebook. Also pitched as a “musical selfie” app, Eyegroove enabled people to create their own videos for SoundCloud tracks. And now? “After two years of daily delight in our users' beautiful Grooves, we are shutting down our app,” explains a message on the startup’s website. “We are excited that much of our small team will be joining Facebook to work on new experiences for people to create, share, and connect.” TechCrunch clarifies that Facebook has bought the Eyegroove team rather than its tech or IP, but the news does make us wonder if Facebook has something more interesting planned for music than simply a me-too streaming service, as has been regularly rumoured. AudioShot is a Shazam-style chatbot for Facebook Messenger

When AudioShot launched in 2015, it was an iPhone keyboard-replacement designed to help people share songs with friends via messaging apps. “Just pull up your keyboard, tap the music key, and select or search for a song to send your friend,” is how Business Insider described it at the time. Just over a year on, though, and the company appears to have pivoted to the latest hot messaging trend: chatbots. Its website now describes AudioShot as “the first music chatbot for Facebook Messenger”, which makes it sound like a Shazam-style music identification service. “Send an AudioShot to identify the music playing around you directly from Facebook Messenger,” explains the site. “Use your microphone to record audio of the song playing near you and AudioShot will send it to you.” The chatbot integrates with Spotify, Apple Music and SoundCloud, with songs still shareable with friends within Messenger. It sounds clever, although whether there’s any more of a business in musical chatbots than in keyboard-replacement apps is another question. Spotify debuts Deconstructing cartoon… on YouTube

Spotify has launched one of its new original video shows, Deconstructed. While the series will “premiere” on Spotify’s own platform, the first episode – ‘Deconstructing: How EDM Changed the World – has been made available on YouTube to drum up interest. The show is a partnership with producer ATTN. “The entertaining animated series, which explores how music is shaped by political and social forces in culture, will highlight everything from the impact of fan girls in feminism, to the rights of LGBT rappers, to the meaning of national anthems and more – all with a lighthearted, edgy tone,” is how Spotify pitched it. TechCrunch has an, ahem, less-admiring take on the show: “The narration is forced and smarmy. It feels like an overpriced startup launch video mixed with a purposefully viral but shallow BuzzFeed clip,” wrote unimpressed journalist Josh Constine. At least Deconstructed isn’t the only basket for Spotify’s original-video eggage: the service has 12 other series on the way, including (according to Constine) a series made with Metallica. Spotify gets a dedicated ‘Gaming’ category

From Spotify partnering with Sony PlayStation to industry sites discussing seemingly sky-high per-stream payouts on Microsoft Groove, the crossover between games and music-streaming is a real thing. Now Spotify is looking to make itself even more attractive to players with a new ‘Gaming’ category on its service. “Find curated playlists like Power Gaming, RetroWave and Top Gaming Tracks as well as hundreds of gaming titles, covering everything from nostalgic 80’s mono tunes to the hottest new releases such as No Man’s Sky, Fallout 4 and Uncharted 4,” explained Spotify in an announcement to users. “Also included are exclusively curated guest playlists by gaming profiles like Day[9] and Sneaky Zebra, and even more to come.” The new category will sit within Spotify’s ‘Browse’ feature across its apps. Mindshow is a tool for making animated VR films

One of the reasons Music Ally is interested in virtual reality (VR) is the potential for interactive music videos rather than just 360-degree concert films. Properly immersive music videos that are controlled (to a greater or lesser degree) by the fan that’s watching – or rather ‘playing’ or ‘experiencing’ – them. But is the necessary technology too expensive and complicated? We’re very intrigued by a tool called Mindshow which was unveiled last week by startup Visionary VR. It aims to make it easy for anyone to create their own “show” in VR by strapping on a headset and manipulating a virtual world and props. It’s the VR equivalent of “machinima” movies created using games. “Bring your characters to life using your body and voice. Everything you do as a character you can record and watch from any angle,” explains Mindshow’s website. It’s early days, but we think inventive artists and music video-makers could do some really interesting things with the tool. TheWaveVR raises $2.5m to make music VR experiences

Music Ally recently profiled British startup MelodyVR and its plans to distribute concert films to virtual-reality headsets. Now there’s another music/VR startup emerging from stealth mode: TheWaveVR. The US firm has just raised a $2.5m seed round from investors including KPCB Edge, the seed-focused offshoot from big VC firm Kleiner Perkins. So what is the company up to? It’s working on “a VR platform for people who love music, enabling them to view, host and socialise in live and recorded shows worldwide, anytime, anywhere” according to its funding announcement. “TheWave creates a VR venue where artists can perform live music by simply importing their tracks, customising the visuals of the venue, and sharing virtual shows. Fans can attend via most major VR head mounted displays, interact with performers, socialise with friends, dance, paint and more.” The company has also added former SoundCloud man Dave Haynes as an adviser, as well as audio-visual artist David ‘Strangeloop’ Wexler. Why Amazon Echo and Alexa are a big part of music’s future

Amazon’s Echo speakers may not be available outside the US yet, but they’ve been a big hit with Americans. So what do you need to know about Echo and its Alexa voice-controlled AI assistant? We’ve researched the key stats and trends around Amazon’s under-the-radar music-hardware play. For example, analysts estimate that Amazon has now sold more than 4m Echo units in the US alone, but that this is only 5% of the company’s customer base there. The Echo is much more than a Sonos-style connected music speaker however: Alexa is bringing a host of apps to it in the form of third-party “skills”, from StubHub and lyric searches to Uber-ordering. We’ve also looked into competition coming from Google, SK Telecom and Whyd, as well as into Amazon’s reported plans to make Echo the centre of its upcoming standalone music subscription service. The full article is exclusively for Music Ally subscribers, so you’ll need your login.
