I'm a big fan of music and use it a lot when working, but I had no idea about how it really affects our brains and bodies. Music is such a big part of our lives, and we react to it in many ways without even realizing.

Yes, Major Record Labels Are Keeping Nearly All The Money They Get From Spotify, Rather Than Giving It To Artists | Techdirt

Yes, Major Record Labels Are Keeping Nearly All The Money They Get From Spotify, Rather Than Giving It To Artists | Techdirt | Music Industry Wizardry | Scoop.it

Joe Gatto's curator insight, February 10, 2015 10:42 AM

Spotify can be a great music discovery service for independent artists, or up & comers on bigger labels. But, if the label keeps so much money it gives streaming music sites a bad rap, even if it's the labels that are the ones being stingiest.

What if a new type of label came along that was more equitable in its dealings with artists, and arranged for example, to fund the recording, engineering, etc. Then, do the marketing & everything else they traditionally do. They back out those costs from the initial profit + 20% for taking the risk. Then they split the remaining profits with the artists 50/50. The artists keeps all rights to its own creations forever. Sounds more fair to me.

Henry Williams's curator insight, February 19, 2017 6:33 PM
This is one reason I wouldn't sign to a major label.
