Clive Davis On the Current State of Music

Clive Davis On the Current State of Music | Music Industry Today | Scoop.it
(Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic/Getty Images) Few people in the music industry are as influential as legendary producer and mentor to the stars, Clive Davis. Davis is the man behind the music. He is the mogul who shaped the careers of music legends Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Carlos Santana, Barry Manilow, Jennifer Hudson and more. At 80, Davis is releasing his first autobiography, ”The Soundtrack of My Life” in which he discusses “never-before-heard tales” of his life in the music industry. While many people believe the…
Robert Pagan's insight:

Music mogul Clive Davis does an outstanding job of painting his idea of what the music industry is today. He states that music will never go "down the tube" and that its an integral part of civilization. However, he does mention that piracy hurts the contributors to the music and that "music should not be free." I agree with this wholeheartedly as it truly has been a growing problem over the last decade and the industry was too late to react.

Robert Pagan's insight:

I like that this article shows a different angle on how the music industry is dealing with decreased record sales today. Robert Pagan's insight:

This video briefly touches in on the slow decline of the music industry as open accessibility to music began to grow rapidly. Given the release of this video in 2008, we can see that even now there have not been very many changes in the state of the music industry. If anything, it's only becoming harder to sell albums.

▶ Interview -- A Conversation With Martin Atkins - YouTube

Martin Atkins talks about his career and the current state of the music industry at Loyola University New Orleans
Robert Pagan's insight:

This is a rather lengthy interview but Nine Inch Nails producer Martin Atkins gives an intimate view on his take with the current state of music. I think his wealth of knowledge and experience really puts the evolutionary decline of music sales into perspective. He also touches on the difference in technique in skills and tools between the music contributors of the old and the new. I think he hits the nail on the head when he simply states that "everything is in flux". He couldn't be more correct.

Joe Walsh on the music industry - YouTube

Joe Walsh, in an excerpt from episode 60 of Live From Daryl's House, talking about the music industry.
Robert Pagan's insight:

I think this short clip of Joe Walsh really paints a very direct picture of what the state of music is today. It's highly accessible and very easy for people to create and/or distribute music on their own. Record sales have notably "tanked" so as Walsh says, it's up to the " younger musicians to figure it out."
