Makes a lot of sense...even for labels!  Many labels believe that giving away music runs completely contrary to their business model, but where do many lables see the most actual ALBUM sales...wait for it...at the merch table while their artists are on TOUR.  Giving away music downloads, and collecting valuable contact information can help their artists communicate better with fans, populate their shows, enhance their touring business, and yes...create an opportunity to sell more CDs.

Antitrust enforcement has seen a welcome revival during President Obama’s first term. A highlight of this resurgence was the Department of Justice’s suit to block the proposed mega-merger between AT&T and T-Mobile last fall.

 

An interesting analysis of the potential anti-trust implications of a heavily consolidated music industry with only 3 majors.  Also, interesting discussion of the competitive implications of a mega-major, and their potential leverage with online distributors, licensing fees, and their impact on the revenues for independent labels.
