Markeis Solomon's curator insight, July 20, 4:45 PM
The company thinks such economics are going to heap yet more pressure on more traditional label deals, which have in the past seen artists take home around 15%-20% of royalties while giving away their rights. So, about that $150m. A large chunk of it appears to have come from some capital raises Kobalt announced last year – first $75m from Hearst Entertainment, followed by another $14m round from Section32. Majors are not keeping up with current independent trends and changes in the music industry. A lot of major labels are ‘sleeping giants’, this partially caused the demise of ‘major labels’ control years ago! Wake up, things have changed, artist have taken that step and evidence of the independent in the market place is plain to see.

Facebook signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music publishing which allows users to be able to upload content using their music. This a a step forward by allowing content creators to be able to have popular music included in their videos such as blogs or shows. Variety Magazine is popular magazine for people who are interested in the music and entertainment industries.

Shanta Robinson's curator insight, January 21, 10:11 PM

Facebook has been known to make their users take down their posted videos, if it was thought to be using infringeming content. The signing of the agreement between Facebook and Sony/ATV Music Publishing, will allow songwriters to earn royalties and upload their music and videos on Facebook and Instagram, without having them taken down due to the fear of infringement.

King-Ameer Colvin's curator insight, December 8, 2017 9:45 PM

YouTube wants to launch a competitor to the streaming powerhouse Spotify. YouTube’s ‘Remix,’ is scheduled to launch in march with negotiations with Vevo set to begin around the same time. I think that this is a interesting move by YouTube because i wonder how much the YouTube red service sales and community feedback led to the decision to make its own music streaming service. The source being musicbusinessworldwide.com  led by well known music commentator Tim Ingham in 2015. One of the more newer music industry website i would consider this a major informational resource for audio industry professionals because the report and analyze many different topics that are happening around the world of the music industry.

Alec Stith's curator insight, January 19, 8:11 PM

YouTube is launching a music streaming service similar to Spotify. Warner Music Group has already signed a deal with YouTube for the launch. This streaming service will add onto YouTube's many services in an attempt to take over the online entertainment industry. The article is published by Music Business Worldwide, which is a popular website for the latest music industry news.

Markeis Solomon's curator insight, July 22, 7:22 PM
From Beyonce’s livestream at Coachella to landmark videos like “Despacito,” “New Rules” and “This Is America,” more than 1 billion music fans come to YouTube each month to be part of music culture and discover new music. It’s also where over 2 million artists come to share their voices and art with the world. YouTube is where artists and fans connect: creating and discovering a world of music.

Nicholas Krutz's curator insight, April 22, 11:12 PM
I feel that streaming and other online music providers can really hurt an artist. A lot of money can be spent sometimes just trying to put together an album. With music being easier to access right now, the only people losing in the end are the ones who help to create it. Seeing as  I want to pursue a career in the music field, it definitely makes me cautious yet aware that this is and has been a hot topic for a while ever since Napster. I feel that The Wall Street Journal is a very reliable source for major news.
