Baauer and Mad Decent sued for unlicensed ‘Harlem Shake’ samples

Baauer and Mad Decent sued for unlicensed ‘Harlem Shake’ samples | Music | Scoop.it

Harry Bauer Rodrigues, better known as Bauuer, has come under fire for the sample used in his breakthrough hit “Harlem Shake.” Hector Delgado, a former reggaeton artist known as Hector El Father, is responsible for the “Con los terroristas” sample while Jayson Musson, formerly of Philadelphia-based rap group Plastic Little, is credited with the “Do the Harlem Shake” vocal cut that triggers the track’s infectious break.

William Fernandez's insight:

This sucks so much!

"Harlem Shake" was groundbreaking in terms of it becoming a YouTube trend so fast. From schools to office jobs, the 30 second videos of performing random acts as the song builds up and drops had people continue making videos, eventually becoming viral. Unfortunately, neither of the two artists that originally created their own samples gave permission to use said samples mentioned in the song, and thus Baauer was sued for use of them without permission and not paying to license them.

The pro of this is that Baauer made an extremely successful single, and surely has a future ahead of him in the music industry while he may learn from his mistakes, which he will make like anybody else.

The con is that this is his first bump on the road to top status. Although it may not seem like it is much for him and his record label, Mad Decent, this mistake will stick with him his entire career.
