Electronic dance music on the rise - The Daily Iowan

Peixuan Sng's insight:

While Electronic Dance Music is currently on the rise, the genre of music could still be a hit or a miss whenever it comes to booking of such concerts, especially in the case of United States of America. Even with its large population and diversified culture, America remains slightly behind the tracks when it comes to popularised music. Hence, EDM is only recognised as a form of mainstream music in places such as Vegas, or LA. In Iowa city, the demand and love for EDM only risen in the recent years, with traditional music still taking the main stage previously. This is also seen in most Midwest cities of America. Thus, EDM's popularisation and growth is still rather uneven at different parts of the world.

Electronic dance music and the rise of the big night out

Electronic dance music and the rise of the big night out | Rise of the EDM scene | Scoop.it
How quiet, introspective hipster music has been drowned out by abrasive, big-room EDM
Peixuan Sng's insight:

The article describes the "Rise of EDM" as a form of cultural development amongst the youth instead of purely seeing it as a strict style of music genre. This phenomena has been seen as both an economic and cultural event, with the rise of youth's choice of lifestyle and the growing business from this unique music industry.

While this trend seem to have grown alongside youth's desire to pursue love and freedom of music, the booming industry has also brought much conflict and abrasion within its own community. Instead of uniting the people who love EDM, much displeasure has been formed with the growing number of so called "DJs". Social media platforms have been used by these budding artists to condemn and insults DJs whom they believe have corrupted the essence of EDM. The days of pursuing peace and love within EDM community seem to have been overshadowed and outgrown by the popularity of this underground genre.

Buy the Hype: Why Electronic Dance Music Really Could Be the New Rock

Buy the Hype: Why Electronic Dance Music Really Could Be the New Rock | Rise of the EDM scene | Scoop.it
The emergence of EDM resembles the arrivals of jazz, rock, and hip-hop in a few key ways.
Peixuan Sng's insight:
Why Electronic Dance Music Really Could Be the New Rock offers a new perspective to the evolution of music. EDM seems to have brought music into a new era with its mass appeal and influence in today's world. While chorus of voices have declared EDM to be the worst musical movement in the decade, the article offers an alternative perspective - EDM is not doing an complete overthrow of the dominant music scene, but instead, a paring down of ideas that had been present from the beginning. It is similar phase when rock rose after the jazz generation. Youth are always a minority constituency and never speak with one voice anyway, there is no need for such a big reaction towards EDM as a up and rising music scene.

Prodigies Leaping Beyond Electronic Dance Music

Prodigies Leaping Beyond Electronic Dance Music | Rise of the EDM scene | Scoop.it
These young, hyperdigital musicians are not dependent on record labels. But they really need their laptops.
Peixuan Sng's insight:

The young generation taking over and leaping beyond EDM, is a accurate representation of the how media is functioning in general. Recording companies, who used to hold the authority to the music scene, are slowly having less control of the scene as Internet prevails. The Internet has provided young budding music artists with a platform to popularize their music, without having to be controlled by recording companies who dictate their genre and music style. Zedd, was a perfect example in the article as he simply spread his music through YouTube and 2 DJ contests. By sending his music to EDM prodigy Skrillex, his sophisticated music was then taken in and under the guidance of Skrillex, popularised and heard worldwide.

There's a fear that hitting the mainstream will have a corrupting effect on the genre.
Peixuan Sng's insight:

This article provided a mixed reaction towards to the rise in popularity of the EDM scene. While famous DJs such as David Guetta and Calvin Harris popularise EDM and collaborate with renowned artists such as Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, many DJs see the importance in keeping the originality and pureness of EDM music. Peixuan Sng's insight:

How and what exactly makes EDM so unique from the other music genres?

The large amount of money pumped into the EDM industry has definitely helped increase the demand for such EDM music festivals. Large art displays, laser lights, stage display and merchandise sold have all increased the grandness and majestic factor of such festivals.

Besides being increasingly commercialised, what makes EDM so proliferable, popular and well liked would be its diversification of music within one genre. The rise of EDM industry has become a profitable industry, closing at $4 billion net worth each year. With tenth top earning DJ to earn even an impressive amount of $7 million each year (and the top DJ Tiesto earning $22 million last year), it is therefore becoming a booming industry with many budding artists trying their lucks out creating music with deep, hard bass and industrial sounding sirens. Festivals and live shows such as Electric Daisy Carnival, are also becoming an extremely lucrative business with all 300,000 EDC tickets sold out even before the line-up was out. Attendees are willing to pay as much as $300 for the festival tickets. As much as digital music space is concerned, EDM seems to have arguably harness more effectively than others with the use of YouTube and Soundcloud to its advantage. People can now discover and share music fuss-free. It's Not EDM's Fault: An Honest Look at Dance Music's Relationship With Drugs | Rise of the EDM scene | Scoop.it
Though recent drug related deaths at shows have reinforced the stereotype that EDM is fueled by drug culture, that's not all EDM is about.
Peixuan Sng's insight:
The rise of EDM has also raised many issues on its relationship and stigma attached to it. While there are some truth to it, judging by the occasional cases of drug overdose and deaths during large music festivals, many reason often causes the EDM scene to not be able to shake off its association with drugs. The public perception of EDM's relationship with drugs have pushed the demand and supply of drugs during music festivals, causing more people to seek drugs and more people to supply drugs during EDM festivals. It ultimately depends on the stance people take towards consumption of drugs during these music festivals.

DJ David Guetta leads the EDM charge into mainstream | Rise of the EDM scene | Scoop.it
Electronic dance music has its roots in disco and rave culture. But this time, it could be here to stay.
Peixuan Sng's insight:

Based on this article, I learnt that EDM originated from Europe, with much setback since EDM was often associated with sketchy underground scenes and illicit drugs. However, with the help with pioneering DJs such as David Guetta, EDM scene began to flourish in the late 1990s. It is amazing to see how the EDM became from an underground, negative genre to a mainstream genre that top the charts regularly.
