Music Matters - Blind Willie Johnson

Music Matters - Blind Willie Johnson | Music | Scoop.it

Blind Willie Johnson is among the greatest slide guitarists that ever lived. Born in 1897, he built his first cigar box guitar at the age of five and spent most of his life on street corners, singing for money. His voice was so powerful; legend has it he was arrested for nearly starting a riot. He made just 30 recordings, and lived a humble existence. In 1945, his home burned to the ground but with nowhere to go, he slept in the ruins, contracted pneumonia and passed away. However, his records kept his music tremendously influential.

Son House, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone, Bruce Springsteen, The White Stripes have all performed or recorded his songs.

Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground" was sent into space aboard the NASA Voyager spacecraft as an example of the diversity of life and culture on Earth.

This record represents our hope and our determination and our goodwill in a vast and awesome universe." ...declared President Carter.

In 2004 Blind Willie Johnson left our solar system. Who knows who else his music will inspire...and that's why music matters.
