‘Makerspaces’ for science instruction also proving helpful for English learners

‘Makerspaces’ for science instruction also proving helpful for English learners | MTRACT | Scoop.it

"Educators are finding that the new “makerspace” movement – a strategy to teach K-12 students science, math and technology through hands-on activities – is providing the added benefit of helping English learners become more proficient in the language.

In makerspaces, students gather a few times a week in a separate classroom, library or museum for a group project using such technologies and materials as 3D printing, robotics, microprocessors, textiles, wood and wires to construct robots and other electronic gadgets. The teaching technique has been around since the early 2000s, and educators have applauded the idea for helping teach science, especially at a time when California and other states are phasing in the Next Generation Science Standards, which emphasize practical application of science over rote learning.

But now experts are also seeing makerspaces as a valuable tool for helping improve English, as children talk through their work in teams and keep journals to record their progress."

PBL Meets the Next Gen Science Standards - Edutopia

PBL Meets the Next Gen Science Standards - Edutopia | MTRACT | Scoop.it

"Although the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have not yet been fully implemented, more and more states are signing up as early adopters. The NGSS call for a conceptual shift in teaching and learning. Along with traditional subject matter, science and engineering are now integrated into the standards, and students will learn about the principles of engineering and engage in the engineering design processes.

In addition, many concepts are cutting across content. For example, the concept of "systems and system models" is used in the exploration of nuclear energies as well as ecosystems. Also, scientific and engineering practices are aligned multiple times with the disciplinary content. The NGSS calls for a deeper understanding and application of content. The focus is on core ideas and practices of science, not just the facts associated with them. This is a great opportunity for project-based learning, because not only can PBL align to the shift in pedagogy, it can also enhance what the NGSS demand."

Where does the maker movement fit into K-12 education?

Where does the maker movement fit into K-12 education? | MTRACT | Scoop.it

Schools around the country have figured out how to squeeze makerspaces into their buildings. Some are integrated into classroom instruction, serving as a resource for interdisciplinary projects. Others are used for after-school clubs, giving students a chance to tinker and explore. Some businesses and nonprofits are filling gaps in school capacity by creating mobile makerspaces or opening their own doors to students. While some schools have the resources or have secured donations to pour thousands of dollars into makerspaces, others are making do with much less money. If the key is giving students opportunities to take control of their own learning, expensive technology is not necessarily required. The pedagogy behind it is most important.

Creating a Course: "Understanding by Design"

Creating a Course: "Understanding by Design" | MTRACT | Scoop.it

“A synthesis of cognitive research endorses the idea that deep understanding of subject matter transforms factual information into usable knowledge. Knowledge learned at the level of rote memory rarely transfers; transfer most likely occurs when the learner knows and understands underlying concepts and principles that can be applied to problems in new contexts. Learning with understanding is more likely to promote transfer and application than simply memorizing information from a text or lecture.”

"This post will outline how to design a course or unit in any subject using research-based tools that have come out of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)."
