Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea: An Urgent Public Health Issue

This animation details the history of drug-resistant gonorrhea in the United States, the dangers of untreatable gonorrhea, and why this issue must remain
CherryNetwork's insight:

Over the years, the emergence of drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae and the complications of untreatable gonorrhea have impacted the management and treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections. Professionally, it impacted the direction of my laboratory science career while working as a hospital medical technologist in  the early 70s. Following the death of a young patient due to a disseminated gonococcal infection, my professional mission has been focused on improving access and delivery of STD/STI laboratory services within community and public health facilities. No doubt, the current presence of drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae and complications of untreatable gonorrhea heightens this public health mission for me as well as my medical, laboratory and healthcare colleagues. Therefore, drug-resistant gonorrhea must definitely be recognized as a top public health priority within the United States.
