GOLDENS BRIDGE, N.Y; ON A Monday morning fire that caused extensive damage to the Goldens Bridge fire station and destroyed three pieces of equipment has been ruled accidental by investigators. The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team and the New York State Police said late Monday afternoon that the blaze appears to have originated in a faulty electrical connection to a firetruck that was parked inside the brick Route 138 firehouse.

Investigators search for cause of Piedmont house fire: Student Research Center - powered by EBSCOhost

Brian Leiva's insight:

The Alabama State fire Marshal's office on Monday was still investigating the cause of a Piedmont house fire that claimed the life of 1-year-old Korbyn Stitts Friday night. Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown over the weekend identified smoke inhalation as the cause of death and said Korbyn Stitts died shortly after the blaze began. Firefighters were able to connect to two hydrants to fight the fire and battled the blaze until after midnight. They worked Saturday to secure the scene and begin a routine investigation into the cause of the fire.

Estimated Global Mortality Attributable to Smoke from Landscape Fires: Student Research Center - powered by EBSCOhost

Brian Leiva's insight:

Forest, grass, and fires release approximately 2 petagrams of carbon into the atmosphere each year, influencing weather, climate, and air quality. Fire emissions are an important contributor to global mortality. Adverse health outcomes associated with LFS could be substantially reduced by curtailing burning of tropical rainforests, which rarely burn naturally. Most emissions originate from fires set in tropical rain forests and savannas, where they can cause recurrent episodes of severe pollution that affect some of the poorest regions of the world.

Fire chief: Chemical didn't cause Piper City fire: Student Research Center - powered by EBSCOhost

Brian Leiva's insight:

The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of a soybean plant fire Thursday, but the city's fire chief says it was not caused by a chemical reaction to water. A hazardous materials team from the Champaign fire Department pulled pallets of soybeans from the warehouse and covered them with sand. The beans were being treated with a fumigant, aluminum phosphide, which becomes a toxic gas when it comes in contact with water.

Grand Rounds: Outbreak of Hematologic Abnormalities in a Community of Peopl...: Student Research Center - powered by EBSCOhost

Brian Leiva's insight:

Although there are sample data on the respiratory effects of exposure to fire extinguisher gas, the potential hematologic effects have not been fully documented. The acute transient hematologic effects observed in the exposed residents were associated with the incident of leakage of mixed fire-extinguisher gases and were most likely caused by a small amount of pyrolytic products, probably phosgene.
