What do you feel are the key digital literacy skills that 21st century learners need? | Motivation | Scoop.it

Digital literacy has become one of the major issues facing educators in this early part of the 21st century. The need to develop students and teachers digital literacies has become increasingly accepted as fact and yet most teachers' and students' understanding of what exactly constitutes a digital literacy still seems to remain quite vague. Even more vague seems to be teachers' understanding of how precisely we go about developing those literacies.

That's where professional development plays a major role. Management and even instructors need to seek sources that offer these skills. Is it time consuming? Yes! I also agree that the "digital divide" and computer literacy need to be considered when delivering learning content to students.

The exposure to this 'social quizzing' app was alone worth the read.  You won't be surprised to find out what is the #1 response, and the final response is unintentionally funny to me - it received 0 votes.

How Are People Really Using LinkedIn?

How Are People Really Using LinkedIn? | Motivation | Scoop.it

Professional networking service LinkedIn blasted through the 100-million-user mark in March, making it even more powerful for finding a job, keeping up with colleagues and promoting your resume.

LinkedIn is growing so quickly, it's adding a new member each second. As the size of its network grows, LinkedIn is steadily getting more useful. But how are people really using the fast-growing service? Researchers at Lab 42 asked 500 LinkedIn users that question and many more, and came up with a variety of answers in this infographic.

Among the fun facts they uncovered: We found it interesting the way top level executives use the service in vastly different ways from entry-level workers. Let us know in the comments how you like to use LinkedIn, or if you don't use the service, why not?...

Marty Koenig's curator insight, June 8, 2013 2:11 PM

Elizabeth advises that you can adjust the scope of your scope of work or make cuts to eliminate things you shouldn't be doing, like:

  • Reducing the number of meetings
  • Optimizing your one-on-one time, asking your people to queue up non-essential items
  • Getting past perfection, since your own basic work is probably 100% better than most people's perfect work (I personally have dealt with this, and now make a conscious decision to do most work ‘roughly right and fast’ versus ‘perfect and taking too much time’)

That's great advice, however, Elizabeth doesn’t cover much on working smarter. There are dozens of articles on the subject, but here’s my take in short order:

  • Don’t wait for emails, pick up the phone or visit in person so you can move faster towards decisions and valuable results. Texting and email doesn’t get across the emotional sub-conversations only available with body language or at least voice inflections.
  • Instead of complaining about a process or procedure that takes too long, re-invent it. Take the initiative to always be thinking about continuous improvement and efficiency. Then collaborate.
  • Don’t edit while you’re typing. When you see a typing error, and backspace to fix it on the fly, your’re distracting yourself from the thoughts and energy to get the message conveyed the way you want it (see bullet 3 above). Open up your creative river and let your thoughts flow from the center of your existence to the keyboard then on to the screen and out to the world.

The article says to ask for direction. That's great advice, since everyone needs an outsider, not a friend or family, to guide decisions and priorities in their work.

Colleage David Lee shared this post with me and I think it's great because it reminds us again about how the stories we share in business can help create shifts and changes in people.

Lee shares a situation he had with a client, and how he used a story to help that person shift to a different place and resolve a long-standing issue.

While the post is about a coaching interaction and the power of story, I bet a good number of the busines stories you share have the same ability. Lee makes good points in the article that how stories can create both personal and organizational change.

Lee's post is perfect timing. I've just been re-reading the book "Influencer: The Power to Change Anything" by Kerry Patterson, et al (2008). It's all about storytelling and great stuff.

If you want to read more about how stories can influence people to shift, then read Lee's post. For a deeper dive, dig into "Influencer" (I have no relationship with the authors or their publisher, I just think it's a fab book!).

10 Big Concerns About Tablets In The Classroom

10 Big Concerns About Tablets In The Classroom | Motivation | Scoop.it

As we look into integrating tablets in the classroom, it’s becoming increasingly clear that buying tablets for the purpose of enhancing learning is very different to buying tablets for recreational purposes such as browsing Facebook and entertainment sites, or even for more serious pursuits such as business or work. Parents and teachers need to consider a myriad of issues specific to young people.

Dimitris Primalis's comment, August 1, 2013 10:10 AM
Very good points ! Once parents are shown what the tablet can or can't do, they become supporters. We have had no major accidents with tablets so far with 4 graders. (9-10 year old pupils).
Patti McCall's curator insight, August 1, 2013 11:52 AM

Still, I wonder how distracting these can be.  I have had students say they prefer print because they can study and read without the temptation to jump on Facebook.

Did you know that 90% of all organizations use content in their marketing efforts?

Although the phrase "content marketing" is something of a buzzword amongst today's promotional teams, the reality is that this inbound marketing practice is both remarkably widespread and effective. To learn more about what content marketing is, how it can benefit your organization and how to get started using this technique to promote your company, check out the following infographic from Demand Metric "A Guide to Marketing Genius: Content Marketing".

This is one of the most powerful infographics that I have seen that makes the case for content. Scroll down to find out more about the power of well written articles.

This is an open secret that quality online and even print publications have known for many years - that classical advertising only works up to a point. Most consumers have reached a mental staturation level when it comes to print advertising.

Articles and well crafted, key message rich (not just SEO) content is capable of engaging the reader and building interest and brand loyalty, as well as promoting a call to action where appropriate.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Perhaps, but combine an interesting infographic or other type of image with captivating copy and you have a powerful instrument of engagement (and the distinct possibility of sharing across the social media landscape).

Nuff said.

Randy Bauer's curator insight, May 15, 2013 4:07 PM

I am sponging on the learning process of content marketing. While I should be hiring somebody to do this for me, I believe that I must understand what impacts the content of my clients, and potential clients.

Infographics are a great outline, and this one provides much content.
