Streaming Era Sets Off Battle Over TV Rights

Streaming Era Sets Off Battle Over TV Rights | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it
Television’s various stakeholders—the studios that finance shows, the networks that air them, and the talent that produces and stars in them—are fighting to protect their interests in the emerging on-demand TV economy.
Nicky Moore's insight:

"

The hope is that the new approach, known as “stacking” episodes, could help build audiences, boosting ratings and ad dollars in an increasingly fragmented and competitive TV landscape. However, studios and talent benefit when reruns of TV shows, such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” are sold for the highest possible amount, and there are fears the networks are jeopardizing that pot of gold."

Storytelling app a hit; launches a new chapter in transmedia | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it

The Incredible Tales of Weirdwood Manor started out as a three-month project. Four years later, the transmedia project, launched in Apple’s app store as an interactive iPad children’s series that is a kind of Harry Potter meets Lemony Snicket. “We wanted to combine the best elements of books, gaming and animation and bring them together and merge them into this new format,” said Pattison. “It is a book – you’ll notice when you go to the screen there are little text boxes on every screen that the kids have to read.

With Playmation launch, Disney evolves the notion of gaming

With Playmation launch, Disney evolves the notion of gaming | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it
With its official launch this past weekend, Disney's Playmation sets out to redefine a toys-to-life category that's now worth US$4 billion at American retail. Disney Consumer Products & Interactive Media's VP of strategy and business development lays out Playmation's game plan.
Nicky Moore's insight:

Disney got in on the toy-to-life action relatively early with Infinity in January 2013, and it rolled out version 3.0 late last month. However, its newest digital/physical product hitting shelves this fall essentially flips the toys-to-life category on its head. With Disney’s Playmation, instead of importing plastic figures into a digital game, kids strap on gear and become a part of the game themselves.

Walt Disney Co and Nintendo Join Forces in E-Sports -- The Motley Fool

Walt Disney Co and Nintendo Join Forces in E-Sports -- The Motley Fool | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it

Disney and Nintendo are teaming up to launch a new e-sports special called Clash of Karts: Mario Kart 8 on Disney XD. The show, which will air on Dec. 5, will feature "eight of America's best young gamers" who will team up with various YouTube stars in a one-hour Mario Kart 8 competition.

Nicky Moore's insight:

"Research firm Newzoo estimates that the size of the e-sports market will more than double from $194 million in 2014 to $465 million in 2017. That may be tiny compared to the traditional sports industry, which is worth around $124 billion, but it represents an interesting pocket of growth that could prove valuable to Disney."

Google, Facebook, Yahoo And Verizon (And Comcast, AT&T And Twitter) Have Chosen Their New Battleground

Google, Facebook, Yahoo And Verizon (And Comcast, AT&T And Twitter) Have Chosen Their New Battleground | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it

There’s a coming scrum that will involve all the major Internet giants, and the stakes are just being set now. It’s a fight for video footprint; specifically, for off-network video distribution and monetization. And it has heated up significantly over the past year, driven by a handful of expensive acquisitions and internal build-outs.

Nicky Moore's insight:

"There are very few pure-play video publishers, and the majority of where people spend their time online (the mid-to-long tail) has almost no video. Given that online video generates a 6-8X premium over display advertising, that’s a lot of money being left on the table."

Australian TV's most powerful and influential people 2015: dealmakers and players | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it

In a business defined by titanic personalities and backroom deals, power can be simultaneously tangible and nebulous. In truth, however, once ego is cast to the side, real power in television is defined by success. Equally, a failure – or worse, a string of them – has been the ruin of many.
