Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR)

Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

Moodle (acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source Learning Management System (LMS ) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE ). It is rising in popularity among the educators around the world, as a tool for creating dynamic websites for students. It is open source, since it is customizable, has no contracts or user costs to pay and is widely available for free use. It can be efficiently integrated with your management system and allows you to support personalized learning, which is effective even outside the classroom and encourages the involvement of the broader community of the institution.

Moodle has constantly maintained its top spot among the LMS tools and has been ranked 11th overall among the top 100 tools for learning in 2013 . Many factors have contributed to Moodle being highly successful. On top of being a great LMS, it is also free to use. Teachers can teach their own online courses using this and find it stable and easy to use and being customizable, it fits to its user’s needs with ease.

Moodle has several advantages over other LMSs, here’s the list of a few:

- It is an open source learning platform, which is utilized by millions of people worldwide. This open source nature allows anybody to tinker with its code or add new things. Users can share changes with the Moodle community for others to use for free. All this leads to the extension and reformation of the software.

- It makes use of simple technologies, as a result of which its developers are easy to find.

- It is built on some of the most reliable technologies, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache.

- It has a fully cooperative development model which offers constant scope for improvement by allowing many high quality contributions to acquire new modules, features and enhancements.

- It makes use of the more advanced programming approach, the object-oriented programming which makes its functionality all the more efficient and allows users to proceed at their own pace, as well as customize it according to their needs.

- It focuses on making the learning and teaching experience constructivist. This process encourages the involvement of learners in the learning process, rather than letting them receive knowledge passively. The learning environment becomes more democratic with interactive and student-centered activities.

- It is convenient for educational institutions and organizations for learning and course management.

- It can be quickly deployed in your organization, without the requirement of any extra efforts.

- It is highly cost-effective, since it has a low risk startup and a low initial investment.

- It provides you with fast and reliable updates of information.

- It provides you with regular support, all the time you use it. Its support feature is active twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and addresses to its developers, members and users.

For those who aren’t familiar with Project Inspire, it was previously a plugin but now is part of Moodle core. Project Inspire makes it easy for educators to support their learners by analysing their performance. This is achieved by providing educators with predictive and descriptive data analysis, enabling them to offer the right level of support to their learners by making data driven decisions. Inspire also supports a wide range of predictive models and machine learning backends, all securely on the institution’s Moodle site, without exposing personal information to an outside agency.

Can You Make Your Moodle ‘Cloud Agnostic’?

Can You Make Your Moodle ‘Cloud Agnostic’? | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
Learning systems are adopting the cloud in increasing numbers. In the LMS arena, Canvas LMS runs an entirely cloud-based operations, while Blackboard plans to drop support for local server-hosted setups in the near future. With Moodle, organizations already take advantage of the cloud, mostly through the support of Moodle Partners. The most prominent ones offer their own cloud-based solutions, often from their own cloud.

The promise of cloud is clear: It will deliver the same LMS solution, with none of the server upkeep, and for a lower fee. But in exchange, customers are entrusting all of their data to a third party. As solutions mature and more organizations jump in, the fragmented landscape becomes more visible. Vendors don’t only offer their own technologies and protocols. Today they lock in customers, but also skills. All the major cloud providers offer paid training and certification programs that give engineers architecture-specific skills. Even though these tend to be well remunerated, they do not translate among clouds.

Use Moodle To Bridge The ‘Girls In STEM’ Gap

Use Moodle To Bridge The ‘Girls In STEM’ Gap | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
The gender disparity in technical fields is still systemic, but initiatives that help girls and women interact with and find role models and stimulate mentoring relationsips seem to have the most sustained impact. Among the list of findings and recommendations in Microsoft’s report, the role of Moodle, or a similarly featured system to support collaborative learning, is evident. Here’s how you can take advantage of Moodle to follow Microsoft’s advice.

Girls need “exposure to STEM jobs, female role models and career awareness and planning,” according to the report. The Moodle Forum can promote ongoing discussions with experienced women. Make special events out of them, for example an “Ask a Women Engineer Day.”

Major Gems In Moodle 3.4.2, 3.3.5 Minor Releases

Critical updates that will help Moodle sites ensure compatibility with Europe’s GDPR, and similar security upgrades, are just some of the highlights of Moodle 3.4.2 and Moodle 3.3.5. The announcement was first made by Moodle HQ Open Source Development Coordinator Sander Bangma on the Moodle Forum, and summarized on the Moodle Blog.

The top headline of the release coincides with that of several tech outlets. It is related to the enforcement of GDRP, the new body of compliance to which software companies operating in Europe will be subject starting in May. To help sites ensure compliance, Moodle has produced two plugins, Data Privacy and Policies. These plugin take advantage of a new “Privacy API” which handles the location and usage of personal information across the Moodle site, as well as user consent. These plugins require the Privacy API, therefore this minor update is needed for them to work.

Also concerning site security, Moodle has extended the compatibility of reCAPTCHA, Google’s omnipresent solution to prevent automated access to sites and its many nefarious consequences: spam, data breaches, impersonation, and general abuse. Google has released reCAPTCHA v2 and announced the decommission of v1 by March 31.

The update is topped with security fixes for 3.2.8, the last for Moodle 3.2, and 3.1.1. Moodle 3.1 is a Long Term Support edition of Moodle that will get security updates until April 2019.

Moodle HQ Developers Working On Bringing Complete Plugin Support To Moodle Mobile

Moodle HQ Developers Working On Bringing Complete Plugin Support To Moodle Mobile | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
To make the work of plugin developers on mobile easier, Moodle HQ has released a charter. Named “Mobile support for plugins,” it is intended to organize ideas and showcase progress.

Ever since the release of Moodle 3.1, developers were technically able to extend plugin functionality to mobile devices. On mobile, plugins are called “remote add-ons.” Making a plugin compatible with Moodle’s apps is difficult and lacking in standards. Installation requires manipulation of the core code in most cases.
