Top 5 Moodle 2.6 Features/Changes

Top 5 Moodle 2.6 Features/Changes | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

Moodle 2.6 is coming very soon, if you haven’t tried it out you might want to jump over to QA.moodle.net to explore a little and get your feet wet. There is a laundry list of new features, changes, enhancements, fixes and improved usability over in the release notes: http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.6_release_notes.

Below you’ll find 5 of my favorite new features, changes or enhancements and each, in my opinion, goes a long way in improving the usability of Moodle.

1. Performance: first and foremost 2.6 should be a faster and less resource hungry site to run. “Many important changes have been made to improve Moodle’s performance: a new sessions infrastructure with 100% support that adds a new memcached session handler and improves the existing ones; OPcache support; changes to reduce memory usage and lots of new cache definitions to reduce database queries by using fast cache stores.”

Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR)

Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

Moodle (acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source Learning Management System (LMS ) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE ). It is rising in popularity among the educators around the world, as a tool for creating dynamic websites for students. It is open source, since it is customizable, has no contracts or user costs to pay and is widely available for free use. It can be efficiently integrated with your management system and allows you to support personalized learning, which is effective even outside the classroom and encourages the involvement of the broader community of the institution.

Moodle has constantly maintained its top spot among the LMS tools and has been ranked 11th overall among the top 100 tools for learning in 2013 . Many factors have contributed to Moodle being highly successful. On top of being a great LMS, it is also free to use. Teachers can teach their own online courses using this and find it stable and easy to use and being customizable, it fits to its user’s needs with ease.

Moodle has several advantages over other LMSs, here’s the list of a few:

- It is an open source learning platform, which is utilized by millions of people worldwide. This open source nature allows anybody to tinker with its code or add new things. Users can share changes with the Moodle community for others to use for free. All this leads to the extension and reformation of the software.

- It makes use of simple technologies, as a result of which its developers are easy to find.

- It is built on some of the most reliable technologies, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache.

- It has a fully cooperative development model which offers constant scope for improvement by allowing many high quality contributions to acquire new modules, features and enhancements.

- It makes use of the more advanced programming approach, the object-oriented programming which makes its functionality all the more efficient and allows users to proceed at their own pace, as well as customize it according to their needs.

- It focuses on making the learning and teaching experience constructivist. This process encourages the involvement of learners in the learning process, rather than letting them receive knowledge passively. The learning environment becomes more democratic with interactive and student-centered activities.

- It is convenient for educational institutions and organizations for learning and course management.

- It can be quickly deployed in your organization, without the requirement of any extra efforts.

- It is highly cost-effective, since it has a low risk startup and a low initial investment.

- It provides you with fast and reliable updates of information.

- It provides you with regular support, all the time you use it. Its support feature is active twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and addresses to its developers, members and users.

Try Reputation-Based Scoring Of Moodle Forums With This Plugin

Try Reputation-Based Scoring Of Moodle Forums With This Plugin | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
The quality-based scoring model in specialized question-and-answer forums, among which Stack Exchange is one of the most popular, caught the attention of Tamara Gunkel and Jan Dageförde from the University of Münster, in Germany, who developed the Moodleoverflow plugin for Moodle 3.3 and 3.4. The plugin is modelled after Stack Overflow, Stack Exchange’s first and flagship forum, focusing on computer science and software engineering.

In contrast to common information layouts, which organize discussions by date, Moodleoverflow offers a “non-linear, non-chronological” organization of responses in question-based postings. Both questions and answers can be voted up or down by participants, ideally according to their perceived value. Over time, user reputation builds by the sum of the scores in their contributions. In any case, students can vote for each other according to “helpfulness,” but only teachers can deem an answer as “Correct.”

In this project, you gain more awareness about the specific dynamics that take place in your classroom. You can use the information obtained through the “Hobbyist” data collection project. You might find in your classroom some patterns similar to those in comparable places, but remember: The focus is understanding the students you are working with, not drawing general conclusions.

Ever since the early 2010s when gamification began permeating more aspects of user interactions, the Moodle community started to show its interest, excitement, and healthy skepticism about the possibility of adding a “game layer” on top of education. Moodle HQ’s Adrian Greeve has been a witness of its ebbs and flows, he shares in an interview for moodle.com. For him it started in Japan, trying to teach English and struggling with making students care. Not only was gamification key to turning motivations around, it revealed itself as a powerful tool in the process of developing instructional content.
