QR Moodle Orienteering Quiz

A video explaining how I linked QR codes to Moodle Quiz questions to create an orienteering challenge for my students.

Worked pretty well and has lots of potential. Am sure there are lots of improvements I could make next time but the students enjoyed it.

Students used their own phones with free QR readers. The QR codes contained hidden text messages. We are in a rural area with pretty poor reception and wireless coverage.. Students worked in pairs..

Why use multiple-choice questions?

Why use multiple-choice questions? | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Included this in the Moodle section as I think it is a welcome reminder and fairly powerful argument to put to those "multiple choice quizzes aren't really effective assessment" people.

ContentGenerator.net - create your own Educational Flash games

ContentGenerator.net - create your own Educational Flash games | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

It is an awesome site anyway with a number of free download FLASH games to use and a ridiculously cheap prices for amazing software suites.

What makes it even better is that with the Mahara Flash player you can upload your SWF file, select the External Media block and hey presto you have a quiz you can play that is embedded on your page!

Brilliant stuff

Here is one in action (rather dull I'll admit): http://mahara.perins.net/view/view.php?t=zdKkxXCTF2Q8RGqjUtZf

Lesson Starters using Moodle Quizzes - Year 7 History: The Tudors

Lesson Starters using Moodle Quizzes - Year 7 History: The Tudors | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Showcasing the use of 3 different Moodle quiz types to create starters for a Year 7 topic on Tudors.

Designed by Head of History who up until this year has never used Moodle before.

Confirms to me that the best use of Moodle is when it is in the hands of someone who is creative, innovative and wants it to work for them.

One question uses matching and the other two 3rd party plugins - Open University drag and drop features and re-ordering task feature.

Really amazing stuff. Hope I didnt sound too patronising..

Drag and drop Grouping labels quiz

Drag and drop Grouping labels quiz | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

A very rushed video that shows how I made a drag and drop labels quiz activity for Science.

In the Chemical Reactions unit for soluble and insoluble, they had a worksheet that students cut labels out of to stick into a table.

I have tried to replicate this using the Drag and Drop markers feature in Moodle. This is part of a series of "add-ons" (maybe not in 2.3) from the OU.

Moodle Activity Module: Dynamic Game design

Moodle activity module to create dynamic games based on the question bank.

Students procastinating too much? Are they playing games instead of studying? Well now you can motivate them by allowing them to do both at once!

Quizventure is an activity module that loads quiz questions from the course it's added to. The possible answers come down as space ships and you have to shoot the correct one.

Return of the Random short -answer matching Moodle question type | Moodle Blog

Return of the Random short -answer matching Moodle question type | Moodle Blog | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

In older versions of Moodle there was a question type called “Random short-answer matching” It was like the matching question type except that the answers to be matched actually came from previously made short-answer questions. It stopped working three years ago and has only just been fixed (thanks to French Moodling quiz enthusiast Jean-Michel Védrine) This week the question type has been put back into Moodle, so if you have the lastest Moodle versions, 2.5.5 and 2.6.2, you will be able to use it.

Many people however only started using Moodle recently and won’t even know of is prior existence. So this post is just to explain it and introduce it. Jean-Michel has added some detailed documentation on the Random short-answer matching question type.

If you have Moodle 2.5.5 or Moodle 2.6.2 then when you add a quiz question you will see this new type available:

There are two things to be aware of. (1) You can’t just add this question and make it there and then, like any other question type,  because you need first to have some short-answer questions pre-made and (2) those questions need to be connected in some way, share a theme.

Huge variety of interactive English grammar, listening and reading exercises and lessons. Free e-learning software downloads.

http://www.parapal-online.co.uk/parapal_demos.html has a suite of free software. The HotSpot task is great and can be SCORMed. The spelling feature that comes part of it is super for reinforcing key terms.

The http://www.parapal-online.co.uk/learning/demos/punctuation_scorm.zip is a template you can use to create really clever punctuation tasks that are also SCORMed. Show them to your English department and get them to suggest ideas.

Moodle Quizzes INSET course

Moodle Quizzes INSET course | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

A meander through the Moodle course I made for the INSET training session on Moodle Quizzes. Tried to cover all of the quizzes and give teachers and opportunity to see how they could be used in lessons. Used the Progress Block as well so teachers could instantly see the progress they had made when the activity was ticked off.

I really enjoy Moodle quizzes - so much you can do with them - really challenges you to create a resource which does not simply focus on testing recal.

Quiz training looked at Self marking and manual marking varieties. Had a brief play with the poodLL plugin too (has mileage!)

Certainty Based Marking in Moodle

Clear explanation of Certainty Based Marking (sort of advanced negative marking). This option is now available in Moodle but the add-ons designed by Tony Gardner-Medwin at UCL look to be far more accurate and effective.

Perhaps some of the language is a little tricky for my students but I do like the idea that it makes multiple choice questions more effective and therefore more justifiable for their use in other subjects.

To download the add-ons and try out the CBM package for all Moodle types click on the link: http://www.tmedwin.net/cbm/moodle/

Now to get it added to our platform and test it out....

gideonwilliams's insight:

How have I missed this? This is AWESOME!  A Clozed task generator to make missing word questions.

Best options are in line drop down but I also like the short answer gap where you have to type in the words yourself.

Simple copy the text into a Cloze question option in Moodle. How easy!

Creating Moodle Quiz questions in Microsoft Word

Creating Moodle Quiz questions in Microsoft Word | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Moodle innovation and programming hacks by Malaysia programmer and teacher, Frankie Kam.

This first appeared years ago with Word 2003 and now it back. Will it work with Word 2010? How much quicker can it actually be?

Time to investigate...

Spent about 2hrs on it. For Word 2010 you need to use the CopyPasteEditUsethisoneforWord2010 file (found that eventually in a forum)

All question items just about worked. The adding in image feature was very hit and miss and the formatting it leaves is not great (centred after title).

Without doubt though if you want to create quick multiple choice questions this is by far the easiest tool but it HAS definite limitations!

I guess you can always go into the question and alter formatting after?
