Frederic Nevers - Increase student engagement using conditional activities and badges - iMoot 2013

iMoot 2013 session recording.
gideonwilliams's insight:

Frederic puts together all his ideas from other blogs into this one presentation on creating a conditional activity led course.

Sadly the sound quality is awful but the picture explain lots and there are links to aspects of his work on other scoops below.

Julian Ridden - Dissection of a game based Moodle course - iMoot 2013

iMoot 2013 session recording.
gideonwilliams's insight:

A recording from iMoot from 2013 in which Julian Ridden (@moodleman on twitter) explains and takes apart his game based learning course.

The first 25 minutes or so are taken over to a discussion on engagment and pedagogy and is a very entertaining watch. The second part of the video is spend in discussion of his course.

The presentation is interactive and part of a workshop so it may seem a little unusual in places.

A great watch nonetheless and a very valuable contribution to an approach that is gathering some momentum (see other posts on this site under gamification, conditional activities etc)

Moodle for Motivation Guide

gideonwilliams's insight:

Sent this today. Brilliant adaptation and development of the original guide by Joyce Seitzinger at http://www.cats-pyjamas.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/MoodleToolGuideforTeachers_May2010_JS.pdf ;

"Created by Natalie Denmeade (@Moodlemuse), it is specifically for tailoring a Moodle course to various types of students with game elements in Moodle’s standard toolset.

Pretty interesting guide if you’re looking to add more game elements to your Moodle classroom. In addition to contrasting each tool for each learner archetype, there’s also a great guide on tips and tricks for adding more interesting content to a course (with links and resources to help you along the way)."

Gamification - What is it and What it is in Moodle

The ever busy Gavin Henrick presents his ideas on gamification and Moodle. The really interesting (and practical ideas) stuff comes from about slide 30 when he mentions badges and Moodle and conditional activities.

Good to see mention made of the very useful Progress Bar which can be downloaded here - https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=block_progress

Gamifying a Moodle course. What difference does it make? Week 2 | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it
Week 2 of my ‘gamified vs. non-gamified‘ Moodle course and school has been closed since Wednesday 27th March due to the Easter break. Since there hasn’t been much activity on ...
gideonwilliams's insight:

Fred explains in clear and consise detail the features he used when developing this course.

Some super nuggets here including the vocabulary treasure hunt using orphaned activities.

If you enjoyed reading this then you MUST read - http://www.iteachwithmoodle.com/2013/01/20/increase-student-engagement-with-moodle-conditional-activities/ which is one of the best reads about actual use of conditional activities in schools (that I have found)
