Moocs: if we're not careful so-called 'open' courses will close minds

Moocs: if we're not careful so-called 'open' courses will close minds | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Massive open online courses, or Moocs, are likely to offer 'higher education for the masses' with fewer teachers, says Peter Scott
Fiona Harvey's insight:

I think this is an inaccurate piece but I include it here because of the comments.  Much more insightful than the author.  Thats why I love social media - your comments are important!  The comments are a great example of why MOOCs are interesting and can be useful, and if Peter Scott reads them he might understand more about the value of MOOCs.

Chris Macrae's curator insight, August 8, 2013 8:38 AM

Over 40 years, Entrepreneurial Revolution research has identified 4 educational monopolies that have made students the main losers of education. MOOCs can breakthrough all 4 of these monopolies. It would surprise me if more than 10 % of professors want to use moocs to free every job creating possibility the net generation could be enjoying with today's extraordinary collaboration technology http://normanmacrae.ning.com/profiles/blogs/collaborate-in-entrepreneurial-revolution-of-pro-youth-economics

How to Make a MOOC

How to Make a MOOC | MOOCs | Scoop.it

"When Marnie Blewitt was designing her first online epigenetics course, she knew that she would need help. A geneticist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, Blewitt was new to the business of MOOCs — massive open online courses that can reach thousands or even hundreds of thousands of students around the globe."

An avalanche is coming: Higher education and the revolution ahead > Publication :: IPPR | MOOCs | Scoop.it
'Our belief is that deep, radical and urgent transformation is required in higher education as much as it is in school systems.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Think this is important and asks lots of questions about the future of higher education.  worth reading.  There have been negative responses to this, not least those who feel threatened, I don't think its worth sharing those thinks but its important that there is a balanced view.  One thing to take away from this report though, is that the graduates that we produce need to be able to effectively contribute to modern society and those graduates who have enhanced their university degrees with entrepreneurial actvitities are those who will succeed and will enrich society.

This was another response to the article: http://conorfryan.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/access-and-avalanche.html

Colleges Turn to Crowd-Sourcing Courses

Colleges Turn to Crowd-Sourcing Courses | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Colleges are building global student bodies and trying to create models for massive open online courses, or MOOCs.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

This is an interesting article, not least because of the Princeton quote that although their early MOOCs have gone well, they are not interested in offering credit because they are concerned with how these MOOCs can give them better insights into what works well for on campus education.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Nice short video - Spoiler alert :-) > drives home the message about connectedness - I liked the comment from Penn State about having a perpetual degree -  so as an alumni you could do a MOOC to upgrade your skills or update the information about a specific topic.  Also, we are in the Connected age, no longer the information age...there, I spoilt it for you. Sorry.
