The Professors’ Big Stage

The Professors’ Big Stage | MOOC Madness | Scoop.it
The MOOCs revolution will go through many growing pains, but it is here and it is real.
VC Vaile's insight:
Dr Crazy puts it most succinctly: "Thomas Friedman is a tool. If only there were a MOOC to set him straight!" This is something that the informed among both MOOC supporter and critics can agree on

Historiann has choice words too. But John Warner's at Inside HigherEd, http://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/just-visiting/ad-hominem-attack-against-thomas-friedman, is the front runner so far ~ but the final call can't be made until More or Less Bunk's and Stephen Downes entries hit the field,

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been making waves ever since Sebastrian Thrun and Peter Norvig's course on AI enrolled 165,000 students in 2011. Key questions include:

● How does the massive scale of these classes impact the pedagogy?

● What is the place of a MOOC in a traditional higher education curriculum?

● What kinds of learning can MOOCs supplement or replace?

● What makes a MOOC innovative (in other words, how do we leverage the MOOC form to innovate rather than perpetuate pedagogical practices)?

● How do we address the problems raised by MOOCs, such as unprecedented incompletion rates?

● (And -- perhaps most importantly -- are these problems really problems?)

As the discussion around MOOCs evolves alongside the MOOCs themselves, the HASTAC community remains deeply engaged. This collection is designed to highlight posts on www.hastac.org about MOOCs, online learning, and digital pedagogy.

Flipping the Curriculum: Intro Courses Should Be Just as Good as Capstones or Else Let Them #MOOC

Flipping the Curriculum: Intro Courses Should Be Just as Good as Capstones or Else Let Them #MOOC | MOOC Madness | Scoop.it

Selingo rightly wonders why traditional educators decry MOOCs with intro courses even as they continue to offer large lecture classes themselves. Just because it's been that way since WWII doesn't mean that we must insist on keeping the higher ed economics that rely on large lecture classes for intro courses to subsidize smaller, more expensive courses for upper level students in the majors.

Gathering the Reflective Threads on Digital Writing Month | NWP Digital Is

Gathering the Reflective Threads on Digital Writing Month | NWP Digital Is | MOOC Madness | Scoop.it

Is our definition and conception of writing shifting in the age of technology? I still don’t know. But I keep that question in mind as I experiment, tinker, write and then bring those ideas into my sixth grade classroom, where appropriate for the learning objectives that I have in mind. But I often feel like two people: the teacher, exploring to understand and use technology with my students, and the writer, exploring to communicate and develop ideas in new digital spaces. Sometimes, those identities overlap (I’m thinking of webcomics and game design). Sometimes, they don’t. I’ve come to understand that those dichotomies are fine.

So, what did I dive into this month? (read on and find out)

Learning with 'e's: Running a MOOC

Learning with 'e's: Running a MOOC | MOOC Madness | Scoop.it

That is both the strength and the weakness of the MOOC. You see, you can connect to anyone, anywhere, at any time to learn from each other. But you can also miss those connections, if certain people decline to join in. MOOCs are also at their most successful when there is a critical mass of participants.
