200 Investment Firms campaign for action on climate change

200 Investment Firms campaign for action on climate change | Money & Renewables | Scoop.it
The world's biggest investment fund managers have called on the Government to act faster to address the risks of climate change as the World Bank warned a warmer world could lead to food shortages, cyclones and drought.

Are we really going to wait to clean up after the devastation has been made or are we going to firmly grab the bull by its horns and provide adequate intervention against climate change before the real damage is done?

If the words by world reknowned scientist have not been enough over the past decade, can the voice of over 200 investment institutions really drive change?

With so much concern over the cost of climate change mitigation, this financial lobbying party could be exactly what we need when facing policy makers.

But, the question leading from this campaign for action is whether policy can be created in time to encourage significant defensive action against climate change?

Fracking ridiculous! Energy security should start and end with renewables

Fracking ridiculous! Energy security should start and end with renewables | Money & Renewables | Scoop.it
Damian Carrington: Shale gas may possibly offset the decline in the UK's North Sea supplies. But David Cameron and George Osborne's dreams of an energy revolution are a dangerous hallucination
Marsha Irving's insight:

This short term energy solution could lead to long term devastation.

With the renewable energy sector being heavily hit by penny pinching and new regulatory reforms in the financial sector, does the renewable energy market really need another punch below the belt?

So why are we looking to pour money in to a sector which could have severe consequences on the climate and environment in the long term? Will this not offset the potential capital going in to new renewable energy development and effectively cripple the sector?

Looking at short term solutions to the UK's energy security problems rather than considering the bigger problems of environmental degradation and climate change emphasizes the UK's inability to plan long  term. Are we really in desperate enough times to go ahead with shale gas fracking.

If widespread drought then flooding and the coldest winter on record aren't warning signs enough, then how about small earthquakes caused by test fracking projects?

Before clearing decisions on these matters the government needs to evaluate not only the needs of the energy sector but also look at the bigger picture and all potential outcomes.
