Sphero, the company that helped bring the scene-stealing BB-8 to life in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then delivered a tiny, but lively BB-8 robot toy, is breaking the traditional Sphero ball mold with a pitch-perfect 1:24 scale R2-D2 toy robot.

And it's magnificent.

Not only did Sphero get every detail right — the colors, the lights, and sounds (directly from Lucas Film Archives' original Star Wars: A New Hope recordings) — but Sphero’s R2-D2 app-enabled-droid moves like the real thing.

New report shows digital skills are required in all types of jobs | #EU #Europe #ICT 

The European Commission has just published the final report of the study "ICT for Work: Digital Skills in the Workplace" on the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the transformation of jobs and skills.

 

The evidence shows that digital technologies are used in all types of jobs, also in economic sectors not traditionally related to digitisation e.g. farming, health care, vocational training and construction.

There were a huge number of positives and negatives to education technology. But, gradually as technology was embraced by the educational institutes, they realized the importance of technology in education. Its positives outnumbered the negatives and now, with technology, education has taken a whole new meaning that it leaves us with no doubt that our educational system has been transformed owing to the ever-advancing technology. Technology and education are a great combination if used together with a right reason and vision.

I start citing this sentence and asking teh question "do you really think technology is that important for education?"

As the world and society itself advance, technology takes its role as well. It's undeniable, technology is all over the world and it is always around us, it takes part of our lives in every moment and every minute, and it is taking part in education too (although not very fast) 

in my personal opinion, we should take into account technology in education, not just because it is growing in our lives, but because it might help teachers and students to improve the way we learn and teach. Take into account, for example, education 40 years ago, i would say it was more stupid and archaic, getting students to spit out data and information unuseful for their lives, but nowadays we become a new human kind and as technology is evolving, our way of thinking should evolve as well.

in this article there are numbered a list of posibilities and advantages of using technology inside the classroom as well as ways of using ir for educational purposes. Enjoy the reading.

I chose this resource because technology in education is vital. This article discusses that there are negatives in using technology, but the positives severely outweigh these negatives. We must continue to implement more technology into our classrooms. I hope that this article will remove any doubt that technology in our classrooms will not benefit our students. We need to continue looking for new creative ways to implement technology into our schools.

Today, a day without tech being used in the classroom would be an unusual day indeed. In fact, according to a survey by Front Row Education, 75% of teachers say they use technology daily with their students. Tablets and laptops are now common in many classrooms. These devices can be loaded with education programs and apps for students, and using this kind of technology makes it easy for teachers to track student progress.

On the cutting edge of ed-tech you’ll find tools like virtual reality and 3D printing. By using virtual reality technology, like Google Glass, students can visit other locations without ever leaving their desks. These tools use 3D imagery to make the wearer feel like they’re exploring a realm in person. 3D printing also gives students opportunities to explore cutting-edge concepts in the classroom. Students can design objects on a computer and then “print” them out on a 3D printer, which uses plastic or other materials to create the object. These kinds of technologies may currently be cost prohibitive for many schools, but you’re likely to see them being adopted by classrooms in the coming years.

Augmented reality–a technology that uses a trigger image to superimpose digital content over a user’s view of the real world–is growing in popularity and accessibility, and it holds a wealth of potential for education. Often described as “QR codes on steroids,” the technology offers new and exciting ways for students to interact with lessons, said Jeff Peterson, an instructional technologist in the Lamar Consolidated ISD in Texas. Peterson presented a TCEA 2017 session on augmented reality’s application in classrooms. Augmented reality-based apps infuse more engagement into learning exercises, and students often grasp complex concepts quickly with interactive content, said Peterson, referencing Drew Minock, an advocate for augmented reality in the classroom and outreach manager at augmented reality company Daqri.

Update: Apple has updated its Clips app, bringing along a suite of new digital assets from the company itself to make your videos and photos a little more lively. New overlays, backgrounds and animated text are just a few of the new features available in the update.

Additionally, entertainment giant Disney has chipped in some content and the implementation seems fun. You'll basically be able to overlay your favorite Disney characters on your photos and even better, you can insert an animated character into your videos.

When we learn something outside the comfort zone, we attempt to acquire knowledge or skills in an area where we’re lacking. Part of the discomfort derives from learning something we anticipate will be difficult. We have no idea how to do it, or we think it requires abilities we don’t have or have in meager amounts. Moreover, poor performance or outright failure lurk as likely possibilities. In other words, it’s going to be hard and require concentration, and what we’re struggling to do, others can accomplish beautifully, seemingly without effort. Their skills, and our obvious lack of them, raise questions about our merits as a learner and maybe even our worth as a person.

The semantics of school reform are sometimes deceptive. This is apparent when educators talk about “personalized learning”. Personalized Learning is an attractive proposition that is, in an increasingly number of instances, ironically characterized by an absence of the “personal”. Many of the emerging “canned” approaches to Personalized Learning are predicated upon false assumptions about student engagement and motivation. Thomas Armstrong, writing for the American Institute For Learning and Human Development, articulates this concern in succinct terms:“I’m taken aback by some of the highly packaged ‘’personalized’’ learning systems now being developed …. These edtech products often give the appearance of offering personalization, but in reality, they more often rate and process a student’s learning needs, wishes, strengths, and aspirations through impersonal algorithms, then generate a profile of the student that includes content ‘’deliverables’’…. Sounds kind of de-personalizing, doesn’t it?”

Schools nowadays are required to learn faster than ever before in order to deal effectively with the growing pressures of a rapidly changing environment. Many schools however, look much the same today as they did a generation ago, and too many teachers are not developing the pedagogies and practices required to meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.

In response, a growing body of scholars, educators and policy makers around the world is making the case that schools should be re-conceptualised as “learning organisations” that can react more quickly to changing external environments, embrace innovations in internal organisation, and ultimately improve student outcomes. Despite strong support for and the intuitive appeal of the school as a learning organisation, relatively little progress has been made in advancing the concept, either in research or practice. This lack of progress partly stems from a lack of clarity or common understanding of the school as learning organisation.

Many people first discovered the power of augmented reality by playing Pokémon Go, but now it’s possible to experience AR sans-phone with a completely different goal in mind: grocery shopping. The world’s first augmented reality supermarket has opened in Milan, Italy. Appropriately called the Supermarket of the Future, the store looks exactly like a regular grocery except for one thing: a digital mirror is suspended above each shelf and table, ready to make perusing food an augmented experience.

When a shopper places her hand near a product, information on that particular food item appears on the digital mirror. The screen provides details on the food’s origin, nutritional properties, allergens, waste disposal instructions, and related products. The store was designed by MIT professor Carlo Ratti, who hopes that having these facts available while shopping will help consumers make more informed food decisions based on sustainability and nutritional value.

Steve Jobs changed the world in part because he chose to focus on a very small number of most important things.
Walter Isaacson’s biography of the Apple founder is full of stories of Jobs’ technique, often referred to as “slash and burn.”
Jobs hosted an annual retreat for the top 100 leaders of the company. He would stand at a whiteboard and list out the company’s top 10 priorities. As the group fought to get their ideas on the list, Jobs would deem which were worthy of inclusion on the board, and write them down.
Once the agonizing work had been done to get the list to 10, Jobs would cross off the bottom seven. “We can only do three.”
By deciding what our priority is, we’re also deciding what it isn’t. That’s hard.

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

The world around us is not labelled or divided in categories, then why is academic content? Can we not relate topics and elaborate meaning on the basis of relationships and intertwined data?

I wonder if this would work in the U.S.? Also, in Finland, students do not take standardized tests until the end of high school (Zhao, 2012, p. 111), so thankfully, perhaps the drill and kill process is diminished.
