Ralph Springett's insight:
There is a lot to take in here. Happily, the start is a good indication of the thinking throughout: "Technology has its place. The trick is using it to enhance learning instead of doing the same thing in a different way."
Definitely worth reading to the end.

Delivering digital change

Digital used to be an add-on to core business but those are days behind us, now. It’s time for universities and colleges to stop treating digital as an accessory and to integrate it fully within all aspects of their business activities.
Ralph Springett's insight:
It is no longer Flexible Learning, Digital Learning or Blended Learning: it's just Learning. Now we can talk about active, authentic, distance, instructivist, constructivist... without the digital conversation being a distraction.

Universities grapple with forcing students to disconnect from technology

Universities grapple with forcing students to disconnect from technology | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
University educators are enacting at least partial device bans as students become more distracted.
Ralph Springett's insight:
What responsibility do educators have in teaching students to manage an increasingly connected life? This article suggests some have decided that understanding and managing digital distraction is not a skill they want to teach - other than teaching through prohibition.
In Aotearoa, New Zealand, teaching life skills such as managing digital distraction sit squarely in the frame of employability. Do we have that right?

The 6 Drivers of Inquiry-Based Learning - Cooper on Curriculum

The 6 Drivers of Inquiry-Based Learning - Cooper on Curriculum | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Inquiry-based learning can be defined as learning that “starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios – rather than simply presenting established facts or portraying a smooth path to knowledge.” In short, we uncover material, as opposed to content coverage and the memorization and regurgitation of facts and knowledge. As a teacher, everything I taught was infused, in one …
Ralph Springett's insight:
This is a robust explanation of some of the opportunities enabled through inquiry based learning. Ingrained in primary education, why has tertiary not embraced an inquiry approach until postgraduate level? In my experience it remains the tertiary tutor/teacher who must champion inquiry based learning rather than the institution promoting and embedding it in how they provide learning.

Flipped learning / Future-focused learning / Teaching / enabling e-Learning - enabling eLearning | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Empty description
Ralph Springett's insight:
Flipped learning. Such a basic concept but so challenging to roll out in larger institutions. Leadership is the key. Specifically, recognising the shift in practice at a strategic level.
Change needs to be supported. Change needs to be planned and progress measured. Institutions will only get so far by encouraging a community of practice. This is not new.
Just saying.

Strategic steps towards organisational digital capability

Strategic steps towards organisational digital capability | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
How digitally capable is your organisation?
Ralph Springett's insight:
Digital capability underpins the development of technology enhanced learning. But, it is the ICT infrastructure that enables learning and development for staff.
The learning management system, and the way it engages with the digital learning environment, can be seen as a doorway to staff capability development along the corridor of daily activity.
Ask yourself - how inviting is this doorway? Is it signposted? is it clear what lies beyond the doorway of capability development?

Ralph Springett's insight:
The reverse classroom is not something you would use for every lesson, nor is the lecture, or the flipped classroom. These are strategies that make up the teachers toolkit of approaches.
Diverse learning and teaching strategies are often applied by teachers, tutors, lecturers without fuss - instinctively.
All have merit, and have challenges. Used strategically they can have great effect. The key constraint I see every day is time and support for teachers' professional development.

Designing learning and assessment in a digital age

Designing learning and assessment in a digital age | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Learning design is a considered, creative process that occurs within a wider eco-system of people, processes, systems and places, in which one element is dependent on the others. As these elements change, and the technologies available to us increase, engaging with an iterative process of creating and redesigning programmes, modules and learning activities becomes ever more important.

Ralph Springett's insight:
A great resource for anyone looking to get team consensus on a learning design approach. Full of commons sense and logical process underpinned by research. What could have been days of discussion about the approach can now be a one hour meeting.

How can educators become more effective in their preparation and facilitation of teaching and learning activities?
How can educators be exposed to new teaching ideas that take them beyond their traditional approaches?
How can technology assist educators without undermining them?
How can learners be better prepared for the world that awaits them?

Digital skills for life and work

Digital skills for life and work | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

The report, released today, highlights the emergence of a new global skills gap where gender, class, geography and age can have a huge impact on whether a person is able to harness new technologies or not. It also presents strategies for ensuring all groups of people can develop these skills.

Via Nik Peachey
Ralph Springett's insight:
Supporting the development of digital skills is complex. Initiatives are often context specific and reliant on partnerships. In addition, the environment must be fertile for initiatives to flourish. Policy makers, education leaders, industry and the individual all have a role in equitable digital skills development.
How is it that you will contribute?

2016 scenario guide to effective tertiary education in New Zealand - Ako Aotearoa

2016 scenario guide to effective tertiary education in New Zealand - Ako Aotearoa | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
This web-resource provides an interactive system-wide view of what tertiary education might look like in New Zealand in 2016. Tertiary education managers and leaders can use these scenarios to plan future organisational and programme development.
Ralph Springett's insight:
Vocational training organisations (ITPs) have been standing at this crossroad for a decade, dithering. It seems we continue to support models that face the institution and struggle to break free from standardisation. Government systems are not helping us decide our direction. Institution leaders invest in continual micro-change because the consequences of a wholesale direction change are likely to impact on the size and scope of the business resulting in job losses and a change in market share. Levels of leadership bravery are low because we care deeply about the people we employ.
Some ITPs have shifted and the results of their commitment to a new education model are beginning to show. Others have not realised it is the education model that needs to change, not the management structure, or IT services, or programme portfolio.
End of rave.

Education as a business – destructive policy, based on bad economics

Education as a business – destructive policy, based on bad economics | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
OPINION: For-profit education is not in our best interests, writes Damian Ruth.
Ralph Springett's insight:
We all know education will not fit a classic business model. Unless you think differently about the consumer: the learner. For the business model to work you need to change the ethical baseline and move the risk from provider to learner. Once you are comfortable with the learner taking the risk then you can start to make money. Many providers do this without realising what they are doing.
There are businesses that protect the learner - they provide quality products and services and options for learners to change the contract once understanding develops. But, the model is the same: all power to the provider.

In 2050, Africa will be home to 1 billion young people. And they'll need educating | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Jakaya Kikwete, a member of the International Commission on Financing Global Eduation Opportunity, sets out a path to universal education.
Ralph Springett's insight:
Intrinsic motivation and understanding their learning pathway are critical factors in learners' success (Hattie). Considering the content is already online, if we find ways of supporting learners to scaffold knowledge toward learner-identified goals we will have success with self directed learning in underdeveloped regions that we don't see in more developed nations.
It begins with frameworks that help learners develop personal learning pathways. Add to this the significant challenge in providing access to the web. Easy to say from my desk. #whiteprivilegeshame
