I just completed the MobiMooc2012.  Check out the  analysis on the  "tree structure" design in the blog by Osvaldo Rodriquez.  IMO, the structure was engaging even though I was one of the 50% "lurkers" for much of the discussion group topics.   I was engaged enough to contribute a project, one of the 17 mlearning projects designed during the 3 week course.
