How Student Video Presentations Can Build Community in an Online Course

How Student Video Presentations Can Build Community in an Online Course | Mobile learning | Scoop.it
There was no way we could simply replicate in the online course the presentations that happen in the face-to-face version of the course. But we could use the online setting to do certain things that are uniquely suited to the online environment. So instead of having students present their solutions to problems in class, students presented their solutions to online homework questions by filming themselves and then posting the videos to YouTube.

This could easily be applied to school environments - both primary and high school.

Some really good thoughts! We certainly do need to change the way we use software/apps and allow students to have greater power in deciding which apps to use and how they use them. As teachers, we are not always the expert on how to use apps!

180 MOOCs to Start the New Year (Is This the Crest of the Wave?)

180 MOOCs to Start the New Year (Is This the Crest of the Wave?) | Mobile learning | Scoop.it
If you haven’t tried a free MOOC, I’d do it sooner than later. In recent weeks, the whole MOOC project took a hit when a University of Pennsylvania study found what was becoming empirically obvious — that MOOCs generally have very low participation and completion rates, and what’s more, most of the students taking the courses are “disproportionately educated, male, [and] wealthy,” and from the United States. This study, combined with other disappointing experiments and findings, will likely make universities think twice about sinking money into creating MOOCs (they can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 to develop). It might take another 6-12 months to see the shift. But I’d hazard a guess that this January might be the peak of the free MOOC trend. Enjoy them while they last. Whatever their shortcomings, they can be quite informative, and you can’t beat the price.

Preparing for the digital university: a review of the history and current state of distance, blended, and online learning

Preparing for the digital university: a review of the history and current state of distance, blended, and online learning | Mobile learning | Scoop.it

The sheer scale of numbers of students led to bold proclamations of education disruption and a sector on the verge of systemic change. However, from the perspective of 2015, these statements appear increasingly erroneous as moocs have proven to be simply an additional learning opportunity instead of a direct challenge to higher education itself. Many of the issues confronting early mooc development and offerings could have been reduced if greater consideration was given to research literature in learning sciences and technology enabled learning.

The State of the iPad in Education in 2015 — Emerging Education Technologies

The State of the iPad in Education in 2015 — Emerging Education Technologies | Mobile learning | Scoop.it
So, here we are 5 years down the road. How is the iPad faring in the world of education?

We’ve already seen that the iPad is still the dominant tablet in education … the undeniable king of the ivory-tower topped hill. While the Google Chromebook appears to be on its way to offering some real competition, only time will tell how that plays out. In any case, change is inevitable and healthy, and things are sure to keep evolving.

Moreover, anyone with a decent understanding of tech realizes that it’s not really about the device, it’s about what you do with it, and how well you do it. That being said, things are still looking pretty rosy for the first successful entry into the tablet computer market.
