Who's in charge of mobile app development? Everyone and no one

Who's in charge of mobile app development? Everyone and no one | Mobile Application Solutions | Scoop.it

So says recent survey of 804 executives released by Appcelerator, a mobile app platform provider. The survey, which included the views of IT directors, CEOs, and development managers,  finds 85% report there is not single "mobile leader" within their enterprises.

If there are no mobile leaders, there probably isn't much of a corporate mobile strategy, either. In fact, the survey also finds most companies haven't quite got their mobile strategies together, if at all. Only 15% of respondents consider themselves to be "mobile-first" companies, and 25% consider themselves to be ahead of the competition.

How to Convince Your Web Development Clients to Go With a Responsive Site When They Just Don’t ‘Get It’

A while back, ManageWP posted an article on 5 Reasons Why Responsive Design Is Not Worth It. You will see from my comment on that post (long before I ever dreamed or expected to be a writer on the ManageWP blog) that I was super charged someone wrote about it at the time. Responsive design was new(er) 11 months ago and to me, it was just a pain. I shared the post and sent it around to my network as if to say, “see, I told you so, we don’t need this new responsive thing.”  I think a lot of other people felt that we were a long way off from being a mobile-first society. And as the article pointed out, it’s not like we couldn’t view sites at all on mobile screens, it was just that we had to zoom in or turn our devices sideways to do so effectively.

Yahoo devours conference call service Rondee and photo app makers GhostBird

Yahoo devours conference call service Rondee and photo app makers GhostBird | Mobile Application Solutions | Scoop.it

Yahoo’s acqui-hiring spree shows no signs of letting up. Over the last day, the company has bought and effectively killed two startups in wildly different spaces: in the photo app corner we have GhostBird Software, the maker of the KitCam and PhotoForge2 iOS applications, and as of a few hours ago we also have the 6-year-old conference calling service Rondee.

No prizes for guessing where the Toronto-based GhostBird folks are heading – as they wrote in a blog post on Wednesday, they’re off to help the revitalized Flickr team make new iOS and Android apps. KitCam and PhotoForge 2 won’t see any further updates, and you won’t be able to download them from the App Store anymore.

Improving Mobile App Functionality and Performance

A key choice faced by businesses is whether to base their outreach, both to internal teams and to customers, on mobile apps or mobile websites.

Adotas, an interactive advertising site, looks at the issue from the perspective of outreach to consumers. From the listed 10 advantages of each approach, there are two takeaways. First, it is not a slam-dunk in either direction. Indeed, both approaches have powerful justifications and rationales. It also is clear that the way to go is dependent upon what the business wishes to accomplish. For instance, mobile websites are cheaper, quicker to develop, and easier to update. Mobile apps, however, are easier to use, can be used offline and provide better data about users.

4 tips for developing applications that end users will actually end up using

4 tips for developing applications that end users will actually end up using | Mobile Application Solutions | Scoop.it

People have been espousing the consumerization of information technology for more than three years. But enterprises are still pushing out stodgy apps, and employees are throwing those apps out the window. Fortunately, IT administrators can escape this cycle and give employees applications of real value, if and only if they take steps to listen to end users, Sanofi executive Brian Katz explained Monday at the Consumerization of IT in the Enterprise Conference & Expo in San Francisco.

Katz, head of mobile engineering at the drug company, talked about the widespread existence of “crapplications” — you know, those that are technically capable of doing way too many things, or suffer from convoluted interfaces, or take too long to click through — and presented tips for admins to keep in mind in the quest to actually help employees.

9 Challenges To Your Mobile App Strategy

Mobile application development will test many IT teams as they deal with everything from mobile context to Google Glass-like displays.

Over the next few years, improving the convenience of mobile services will depend on improving the use of context in delivering mobile experiences. Your business will need to predict what your customers want when they launch a mobile application or website. Delta Airlines, for example, knows how close a passenger is to departure time and delivers relevant content, such as a frequent flier's real-time status on the upgrade list for her next flight. Today, that kind of context is uncommon. Tomorrow, it will be table stakes.

Application developers writing mobile apps will have to start thinking about "mobile context" -- which we define as everything your customer has told you and all you can understand about what the customer is currently experiencing. Context is just one of the big, new challenges that application developers will face. Here are several more of the most important challenges we see.

AppScale's mission: Making your mobile apps really mobile

AppScale's mission: Making your mobile apps really mobile | Mobile Application Solutions | Scoop.it

AppScale wants to make it so the web and mobile apps you build are truly mobile. That means if you construct them on a given cloud platform you are not married to that platform for life when it comes to deploy and run them. AppScale focuses on providing a way to migrate or fail over apps to another cloud, or even your own servers, as needed. That minimizes that knotty problem of lock-in, which is there if you scratch the surface of any IT team.
