"Our biggest hurdle is the bandwidth," said Sharon Breese, Fatima High School’s librarian. If a lot of people are online at once, "we’ll hit our max, and everybody kind of just slows down," Breese said.

Palmyra's “one-to-one” ratio technology initiative is moving ahead at full speed, with each student from Kindergarten through 12th grade using an Apple iPad to enhance and supplement their learning experience.

Granby school library uses app to encourage reading

GRANBY, Mo. — Students at the Granby campus of the East Newton School District are now able to receive information about the library through a free messaging mobile app known as "Remind."

Once students download the app they can select their classes and choose which groups they want to join. "It's just a very quick way to send information to a lot of people, and it's safe and private," said Cheryl Turner, Granby Elementary librarian.

North Callaway schools are thinking outside the box when it comes to serving residents.
Floyd Pentlin's insight:
According to district librarian and media specialist Justin Hamm, the district will open its school libraries to help people gain internet access and more.

 “As far a libraries are concerned, we have none in any of the communities that North Callaway serves,” he said. “Daniel Boone (Regional Library system) does awesome things for our county, but we need more access.” 

The district went to a four-day, Tuesday through Friday schedule at the beginning of this school year, meaning the four libraries in the district’s four schools are available on Mondays.

Missouri 2017-18 Regional Teacher of the Year Winners Announced

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) announced its 2017-18 Regional Teachers of the Year as part of the Missouri Teacher of the Year program. The 32 teachers selected from all over the state are now eligible for the state teacher of the year award:

Tipton R-VI School seeking new superintendent

The Tipton R-6 School Board voted June 8 to post the job vacancy created by the resignation of Superintendent Daniel Williams, who has accepted a superintendency at another district.
Floyd Pentlin's insight:
In other business, Tara Melton presented a report on the elementary library. She reported that about 300 students kindergarten through sixth grade are served. The library contains about 11,170 books, and more than 700 audio-visual materials which are available for teacher use. There were 26,713 total items checked out in the 2016-17 school year, with 26,328 being books. 

Andrea Buerky presented a report on the high school library. She reported that about 295 students are served in grades seven through 12. The library contains about 15,528 books. These include reference, non-fiction, professional and fiction. She reported that efforts are being made to keep the non-fiction current, but those books are generally more expensive and not as popular with the students. She said that biographies, sports, hunting and fishing go over well.

By Friday afternoon, Tara Pennington was calling the day a whirlwind.In the morning, she attended Blue Springs School District's annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast. Several hours later, she had a list of some tasks to accomplish by the time the next school year rolls around.First though, Pennington will enjoy her Teacher of the Year Award, for which she was “very surprised” to be selected from the nominees of each school building in the district. "These were difficult," said librarian Jill Meisenheimer, who emceed the event. "You guys totally out did yourselves." Marcia Bibb, Mona Spayde, and Krista Davis served as judges. And, Nancy Lewis, former middle school librarian, was moderator. In 1998, Lewis began the spelling bee tradition.

As more schools use open educational resources, school librarians find that their roles as digital content curators are expanding or being redefined.

At Parkway School District in Chesterfield, Missouri, teachers promote librarians as a go-to source for information. “Our librarians are the ones who are looked to for technology, for resources,” says Bill Bass, innovation coordinator for technology integration, information, and library media at the district. When it comes to OERs, Bass says, “One of our successes is that we have developed a greater sense of trust between librarian and teacher, and librarian and student, because they are having different conversations now about the content and where that content came from.”

Missouri Teacher of the Year Finalists Chosen for 2017-18

Finalists have been named for the 2017-18 Missouri Teacher of the Year award. School districts throughout the state submitted nominations for the award, and the finalists were chosen by a selection committee appointed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The finalists were selected from among 32 regional teachers of the year.
