REVEL can provide artificial tactile sensations on almost any surface, including paintings.

REVEL is a new wearable tactile technology that modifies the user’s tactile perception of the physical world. It can add artificial tactile sensations to almost any surface or object, with very little if any instrumentation of the environment.

In praise of the gallery invigilator - du gardien au médiateur

In praise of the gallery invigilator - du gardien au médiateur | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

EN :

(...) In today's new institutions though, the invigilator (...) is also called upon to be interpreter, facilitator, demonstrator, guide and technician.

(...) the function of the invigilator has increased and expanded. It has reached the point were this role frequently plays a crucial part in the creation of the artwork itself and certainly the gallery visitor's experience of it.

(...) The role of the gallery invigilator is an area which deserves more thought and respect. Currently many institutions under financial pressure seem keen to dispense with paid invigilators, replacing this important entry-level position, where a real understanding of arts audiences can be gained, with volunteers.

FR :

2 wrong assumptions found out by the Brooklyn Museum :

> Placing the survey table near the exit would encourage visitors to stop on their way out : No, visitors are focused on the exit

> A sign inviting people to participate in the survey will draw people to the table : NO, not enough

No, ça suffit pas

How can museums preserve our digital heritage? (Wired UK)

How can museums preserve our digital heritage? (Wired UK) | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

Museums are experiencing a digital revolution. Born digital objects, or things that have no physical equivalent, are shifting what we understand museum objects to be.

(...) Interpretation, exhibition and display of these objects and narratives are the museum curators' bread and butter. But now we are being challenged to work and think differently.

(...) Digital objects form a significant part of our cultural and intellectual heritage, particularly as some traditional objects we've collected in the past are being replaced by digital equivalents.

(...) Where born digital objects become challenging is when we think about how to represent the impact of new digital technologies on the day-to-day life

(...) Digital communication and tools represent immediacy and the chance to record history as it happens.

(...) Digital is bringing people into conversations within the museum who would never normally be involved in the care of traditional physical objects.

(...) Authenticity is another word that is continually banded around when digital is mentioned. Multiple copies of a digital object can exist simultaneously (...) raises the question of how museums should value digital objects, when traditionally valuing an object has relied on uniqueness. How should museums cope with this?

(...) Of course the biggest elephant in the room is that born digital objects no longer require buildings or physical spaces.

New York Public Library Lab

One of the things I’m really interested in is the idea of innovation and R&D labs within cultural institutions. Are they a good idea? Do they ring fence creativity? Are they good test beds? Can they influence wider institutional culture?

(...) Engaging in contemporary trends and thinking ok so what’s ‘cool’ now and how can we utilise this to add long term value to our collection?

(...) it allowed curators to experiment with linked data using a language that they understood (genealogy). The hands on nature of the project facilitated an entry point into evolving curatorial practice, and changed curatorial thinking.

This project laid the foundation for developing new projects with new curators. A valuable legacy that will really shape how NYPL and NYPL Lab continues to develop its online offering and digital engagement opportunities for the public.

The Importance of Social Media in Driving People to Your Museum or Visitor-Serving Nonprofit (DATA) |

The Importance of Social Media in Driving People to Your Museum or Visitor-Serving Nonprofit (DATA) | | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

"There’s a lot of conversation about the ROI of social media and confusion about how to explain its importance to executive leaders. Need help? Here’s some data behind how social media drives attendance to visitor-serving organizations (zoos, aquariums, museums, botanic gardens, theaters, etc). The research provided here is courtesy of IMPACTS.

It’s as easy as 1-2-3 (or, rather, the transitive property in mathematics):

1. Reputation is a major motivator of intent to visit

2. Social media drives reputation

3. Thus, social media is a driver of visitation"

The emerging Semantic Web | Musematic

The Semantic Web as made real with lightweight means such as LOD and Microforms means that an inclusive, broad knowledge of who we are may finally be at hand.

(...)

The Semantic Web addresses “context” by providing behind-the-scenes mark-up to note “relationship” information in a form that search engines like Google and Bing are increasingly paying attention to. We can record information such as “Gertrude Elion was a scientist” and “Gertrude Elion won the Nobel Prize” in ways that the search engines and other Semantic Web tools (when they appear) will be able to understand and combine with other semantic information around the web in order to answer search queries more subtly and more completely.

Think of how much this changes the way that people can understand the world.

In essense, the Semantic Web means that we don’t have to wait for someone to use the information we provide to write women into history; once that information is properly coded and on the web, and as browsers and search engines take better advantage of this technology, we are writing women directly into search results.

How Open Space is shaping the future of theatre and the arts

How Open Space is shaping the future of theatre and the arts | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

Open Space is shaping and changing the future of theatre and the arts, says Phelim McDermott of Devoted and Disgruntled

What feels like casual conversation can effect real change

Open Space is a simple yet sophisticated way for large groups of people to self-organise their own conference. It operates on a series of principles and a single law: "the law of two feet", which basically translates as 'don't stay where you don't want to be, move to where your time is being used well'.

In doing D&D over the past seven years we have discovered there is a great hunger for these events, both to initiate projects and to create a genuine sense of community, a cure for the isolation which many artists feel when they are busy making their work.

Making the Museum Publishing Band

Making the Museum Publishing Band | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

Some museums have already implemented this wider definition of publishing by centralizing efforts among various publishing silos

(...) In thinking about ‘voice’ as a concept, it’s important to recognize that each individual ‘voice’ is not a static set variable. This is what keeps our institutions evolving and alive—but also why strong vision and leadership remains paramount in keeping efforts moving in the same direction.

(...) we must harness the contributions of a larger set of talents and expertise in a truly collaborative manner

(...) The emerging role of the ‘publishing technologist’ is analogous to that of the editor.

(...) We’d like to suggest that we approach museum publishing strategy as a collaborative creative process. Should we start a publishing band at the museum?
