Content Curators Are The New Superheros Of The Web

Content Curators Are The New Superheros Of The Web | META Curation | Scoop.it
Yesterday, the ever-churning machine that is the Internet pumped out more unfiltered digital data.Yesterday, 250 million photos were uploaded to Facebook, 864,000 hours of video were uploaded to YouTube, and 294 BILLION emails were sent.
Courtney Blanchard's insight:

Like a lightning bolt, this article arrived in my inbox (thanks, Dad!) when I was just a short month away from graduating with my Library Science degree from University of Maryland.  Content curation is a thing that I have always enjoyed doing without knowing it was a thing of superhero status.  This article put a name and a purpose to the reason I pursued a degree in information services: my natural inclination to locate, evaluate, classify, and make information accessible. In the spirit of honesty, this was mainly done to suit my own personal needs (Pinterest!), but now I have the means and desire to use this inclination to help others.  Curation to serve, curation to democratize information!  Rosenbaum does an excellent job of illustrating the scale, the challenge, and the benefit of curation efforts.  His piece on best practices is also quite helpful in navigating this, as he states, "Herculean task" (more on this in subsequents posts).  Overall, this is a great introduction to the concept of content curation and gives hope to all budding and established content curators.

Keep the rabbit hole of the internet open by honoring discovery.
Courtney Blanchard's insight:

I think there is an easy pitfall in the field of content curation: that one might feel as if one has accomplished a lot by merely gathering and listing content without attributing the creator and source.  This is dangerous and unfair to all content creators and curators.  The Curator's Code offers a simple solution in the name of "honoring the creative and intellectual labor of information discovery."  It may be idealistic (I cannot say that I will be using this code as dilligently as I should or would like to), but I find this effort to codify attribution of discovery inspiring (but of course I do - I'm a librarian and would codify everything if I could).  I also appreciate the spirit of community the code promotes, the whimsy and lighthearted tone it takes with the "via" and "hat-tip" attributions, and it's aesthetically appealing to boot!  Regardless, this a direction in the right step of giving credit where due.
