#FF “An Incredible Victory”: Opponents of #Keystone XL Pipeline Praise Judicial Order Blocking Construction #Montana #tarsands | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it
On Thursday, a federal judge in Montana temporarily halted the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada’s tar sands region in Alberta to refineries as far away as the Gulf of Mexico. The court’s decision will require the Trump administration to review more thoroughly the potential negative impacts of the pipeline on the surrounding environment and climate change. President Obama halted the construction of the pipeline, which is being built by TransCanada, in 2015 following mass public protests, but Trump reversed the order shortly after he came into office. Environmental and indigenous groups hailed the decision Thursday. Sierra Club attorney Doug Hayes said in a statement, “The Trump administration tried to force this dirty pipeline project on the American people, but they can’t ignore the threats it would pose to our clean water, our climate, and our communities.” We speak with May Boeve, executive director of 350 Action, the political arm of the climate organization 350.org.

#FF Hothouse Earth #climate changing much faster the published by corporate #media

#FF Hothouse Earth #climate changing much faster the published by corporate #media | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it

An interesting new study: “Trajectories of the Earth System in the Anthropocene,” Will Steffen, Johan Rockström et al, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Aug. 6, 2018 lays out the pathway for Earth entering a Hothouse Climate State. “Our planet is still in danger of becoming a ‘Hothouse’ Earth despite our current efforts …

Therefore, the Planet Hothouse study poses an interesting supposition: What if climate scientists have been way too optimistic, too sanguine, too upbeat and not scaring people nearly enough?

In point of fact, there’s a strong rationale for questioning the validity of climate models. For example, frequently scientists say how “surprised” they are at “how much faster things are happening than models predicted.” This happens way too often to find comfort in science models.

After several years of repeatedly hearing apologetic scientists claim the climate system is not following their models, meaning, bad stuff is happening much faster than models predicted, it becomes increasingly obvious that climate change could be closer to an out of control beast than anybody realizes. After all, the track record is all about “surprised scientists.”

Animal species facing mass #extinction in #Haiti as habitats stripped bare by #deforestation #EU #Greenpeace | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it
Haiti is facing a deforestation crisis, with a new study finding that it has less than one percent of its original primary forest – and even that is under threat. Forest-dwelling species are becoming extinct as a result.

The study, conducted by scientists affiliated with Oregon State University and published in the journal PNAS on Monday, found that 42 of Haiti’s 50 largest mountains have lost all of their primary forest. The term ‘primary forest’ refers to forests that are original and untouched, rather than ‘disturbed forests’, which have been selectively logged or regrown.

What’s worse is that if these conditions continue, Haiti will lose all of its primary forest over the next two decades.

Global #tourism causes 10th of all #greenhouse gas emissions #science report — RT Business News | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it
"A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney shows that global tourism, a trillion-dollar industry, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and its carbon footprint is expanding rapidly.

Domestic and international tourism account for eight percent of total worldwide carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, researchers have found.

The study was based on data from 189 countries around the globe. It showed that the industry’s carbon footprint was driven mainly by demand for energy-intensive air travel."

Poorly prepared, overpriced food can be found in airports around the world. The food on the planes is improving, but is still pretty bad. Airports have become shopping malls, with 98% unnecessary (and overpriced) merchandise. Pretty much all aspects of air travel are inefficient and polluting.
