Samuel Gruber's Jewish Art & Monuments: Slovakia: What's Wrong with the Bratislava Holocaust Memorial?

Samuel Gruber's Jewish Art & Monuments: Slovakia: What's Wrong with the Bratislava Holocaust Memorial? | Memory Spaces in Film and Visual Culture | Scoop.it
Matilda Magdalena's insight:

I recently visited Bratislava on an Erasmus teaching exchange. I was interested in this particular example of a commemoration of a space which no longer exists: the synagogue, which had been torn down after the war to make way for a highway. The image of the synagogue (which can be seen in Samuel Gruber's blog, but is not the picture attached to this link) floats, outlined or silhouetted, against black stone, reminiscent of an elongated gravestone. Looking into the stone, one can see the reflections of the present-day buildings within it, such that past and present spaces seem to haunt one another. Looking from another angle, the vast blackness of the stone suggests a determined deadness, a void amongst the colourful buildings and graffiti surrounding it. It suggests a past that is finished, complete within itself, with little of the possibility of re-imagining and re-negotiating this past that is happening in some Polish cities. As Gruber points out, also, the image is very easy to miss, with little information as to why it is there in the first place - a momument to be forgotten rather than remembered.

Kadr z filmu "Ida" Pawła Pawlikowskiego, fot. TIFF Paweł Pawlikowski’e newest picture garners the main prize at the 57th edition of the London Film Festival, as well as the Warsaw Grand Prix in the International Competition category during the annual Warsaw Film Festival
Matilda Magdalena's insight:

Ida is the latest in a series of films exploring Polish-Jewish history and memory, particularly in rural areas, and literally and metaphorically unearthing remnants of the past.

Rajkowska's 2006 project: a pond on Grzybowski square, within the former Warsaw Ghetto; 'the artist wants to let in some fresh air, some oxygen into this space overfilled with meanings, and create a neutral, seperate place that could be treated as a kind of sanctuary from the chaotic urban landscape' (Katarzyna Bojarska)

Film, Memory and the Legacy of the Spanish Civil War - Mercedes Camino - Palgrave Macmillan

Film, Memory and the Legacy of the Spanish Civil War - Mercedes Camino - Palgrave Macmillan | Memory Spaces in Film and Visual Culture | Scoop.it
Film, Memory and the Legacy of the Spanish Civil War reconstructs the legacy of the Spanish Civil War through an investigation of the anti-Franco guerrilla of the 1940s and 1950s. The book explores the memory of Spanish resistance fighters and their civilian supporters, concentrating on their cinematic representations in films and documentaries released between 1953 and 2010. This research fits within the emerging comparative field of Memory Studies, which has grown considerably in the last two decades. Along those lines, the efforts of civil society to understand and come to terms with the past have gathered momentum in twenty-first century Spain. One visible outcome of this determination has been the recovery of corpses from unmarked graves, which has been accompanied by a renewed interest in the cultural, historical, legal and archaeological traces of the millions who suffered under Franco's protracted dictatorship. This book sheds light especially on the silent roles played by women and children in the struggle against fascism.

Marcel Łoziński's Father and Son on a Journey and Paweł Łoziński's Father and Son are two different documentaries composed of the same scenes
Matilda Magdalena's insight:

At the recent Jewish Motifs International Film Festival in Warsaw, I was lucky enough to meet Pawel Lozinski and see his fascinating new documentary, Father and Son. Lozinski's phenomenal documentary Birth Place (1992), in which a Jewish man travels to a Polish village to search for the remains of his father, is one of the most disturbing visions of Polish-Jewish relations.
