10 ways to reach #SAMR ’s #Redefinition level - DitchThatTextbook

10 ways to reach #SAMR ’s #Redefinition level - DitchThatTextbook | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
“ SAMR is a technology integration model that basically shows the way to get the most out of your technology in the classroom. The dotted line in the chart to the right shows where you cross over from doing what you’ve always done — just adding technology — to doing what you couldn’t do before. Redefinition is at the top of the SAMR model, but that doesn’t mean that you “win” or that you’re doing it right only if you reach redefinition. Some tasks just aren’t made for redefinition, and great learning can happen without redefinition. But redefinition is the Holy Grail. If you get there, you’re providing learning that couldn’t have happened a decade ago (maybe a year ago).”

8 Apps for Testing Student-Created Curriculum

8 Apps for Testing Student-Created Curriculum | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
“ Technology is an amazing tool with endless possibilities, especially in 21st century education. Perhaps you aren’t ready for semester-long student-created curricula. Maybe you’d like to test it out on a couple of individual lessons within a unit. That’s perfect. The key is to trial and error. Take a gander at the educational apps below and see if you can brainstorm some ways to hand some creative power to your students.”

Sharing the Screen in 1:1 Classrooms

Sharing the Screen in 1:1 Classrooms | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
“ Placing devices in the hands of students can transform their experience in the classroom. Easily accessible content consumption and content creation tools change the way that we think about helping students meet learning goals. As a former 1:1 iPad teacher, my thinking about technology integration has changed over the past several years. Moving up the ladder of SAMR and getting students moving with portable devices are just two areas where I've shifted my initial thinking about technology tools in educational settings. A 1:1 learning environment is a powerful sight. All students with access to their very own device can alter the way that we've always thought about classroom instruction. Students can work through individualized curriculum on their own device and search to find answers to their questions. Although the personalization of a student experience in a 1:1 environment is powerful, it's important that students don't lose those necessary moments of collaboration and critical thinking that come from working together with their peers.”

Top STEAM tools for Online and Offline Learning: Part 1 - Daily Genius

Top STEAM tools for Online and Offline Learning: Part 1 - Daily Genius | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
“ A few months ago, the President of the United States, Barack Obama, announced a bold new initiative that aims to bring computer science to K-12 education and make computer programming a basic skill for all students. The implications of this development can be staggering: STEAM will become much more widespread. Soon, teachers around the country will teach students computational thinking, looping, conditional statements, and other high order programming concepts. There are several tools and platforms teachers can use to accomplish this goal. These tools range from web platforms, to robots, to manipulatives teachers can use to teach coding. Some are more powerful than others, and offer different gains, expertise, and rewards, but they all have a place in the classroom. ”

“ How long does it take to build a house? Obviously it depends on the size of the house and other factors, but somewhere around six or seven months is a good estimate. Chinese construction company HuaShang Tengda thinks that’s pretty funny, and have essentially laughed in the face of traditional construction by 3D printing a 400-square-meter, two-story house in a mere month and a half.”

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: A Nicer Way to Put Together Reading or Resource Lists - Padlet

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: A Nicer Way to Put Together Reading or Resource Lists - Padlet | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
There are lots of reasons to put together lists of reading and resources. Maybe students are keeping track of their readings for the year. Maybe you have put together a collection of readings and resources for students about a particular area of study. Perhaps students are putting together a list of resources.  Whatever the case may be, rather than putting together a list of links, students and teachers can go a more visually pleasing route with Padlet.

The Padlet below is a collection of resources I put together to share with a colleague about some of my favorite writings on using tech in the classroom.  Rather than a bunch of urls, Padlet lets you package them attractively.

“ It’s hard to believe that just six years ago Minecraft was virtually unheard of. It was little more than a hobby project for creator and designer Markus Persson. Fast forward to 2016 and Minecraft has completely changed the way we perceive videogames. Starting as a novelty in a handful of innovative classrooms, Minecraft is now a foundation of curriculums around the world. From math to art to geography and even quantum mechanics, Minecraft and imaginative educators are turning bland subjects into incredible immersive learning experiences.”

Can Learning to Knit Help Learning to Code?

Can Learning to Knit Help Learning to Code? | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
“ “Thinking is like cosmic knitting,” Waldorf school founder Rudolph Steiner wrote nearly one hundred years ago. Steiner developed a comprehensive handwork curriculum for Waldorf students based on this idea, filled with knitting, sewing and woodworking, believing that “a person who is unskillful in his fingers will also be unskillful in his intellect, having less mobile ideas and thoughts.” Today’s Waldorf students still knit socks and whittle kitchen spoons and many Waldorf schools shun the use of technology. Those two things — handwork and technology — might seem at first glance to be at odds. But there’s a case to be made that handwork and computing — and the kind of process that links the two — are more closely related than one might think.”

A Class on Coding and Bots

A Class on Coding and Bots | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
“ Thinglink of Resources: https://www.thinglink.com/scene/753039991126360065 I have been asked to return to teach summer enrichment classes on maker education for elementary-aged learners at a local school during the summer of 2016. One of the new classes I am designing is called Coding and Bots. It is a week long (5 days) class that will meet for 2.5 hours each morning. The description is: Learn how to code first by playing games and then by coding some bots including Sphero, Ollie, mBot, OZOBOT, and Dash and Dot. All ages are welcome but the child should have basic symbol recognition/reading skills. Two things to note about this class are, first, I learned last summer not to underestimate the learning potential of very young kids. These classes are mixed ages ranging from 4 to 10 year old kids. For most of the maker education activities, the very young ones could perform them, sometimes better than the older kids. Second, I am a strong proponent of hands on activities. Although I like the use of iPads and computers, I want elementary aged students to have to directly interact with materials. As such, I am designing Coding and Bots to include using their bodies and manipulating objects. This translates into having all activities include the use of objects and materials excluding and in conjunction with the iPad – not just using the iPad and online apps/tools to learn to code. The activities I plan to do follow:”
