Richard I of England crowned King of England on this day in 1189. All Jews and women were barred from the ceremony, but some Jewish leaders arrived to present gifts for the new king. According to one chronicler, Richard's courtiers stripped and flogged the Jews, then flung them out of court. And then it got worse. Much worse...
