Primary Health Networks to replace Medicare Locals

On Thursday Western NSW Medicare Local chief executive, Dr Jenny Beange, said she welcomed recognition of the importance of investment in primary care organisations who are tasked with keeping people well and out of hospital. “In relation to these new announcements and changes, WML believes it is in a good position to make this transition to becoming a Primary Health Network,” she said.

The 61 Medicare Locals set up by the Gillard government to plan and co-ordinate health services will be replaced by a smaller number of bodies, to be called Primary Health Networks, which will perform a similar function. They will be aligned with state-run local hospital networks, and have clinical councils largely made up of local GPs.

Southern NSW Medicare Local has partnered with local councils across the region to implement a pedometer library loan scheme, encouraging local residents to “walk their way to better health”.

Residents can now borrow a step-counting pedometer from their local council library for free and see just how easy it can be to achieve the recommended 10 000 steps per day. The pedometer counts an individual’s steps, and the kit comes with healthy lifestyle tips and other health information to motivate and sustain an exercise habit.
