The ethics of medical tourism

The ethics of medical tourism | Medical Tourism and Patient Safety | Scoop.it

The ethics of medical tourism are coming under scrutiny from academics in the USA. Leigh Turner is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics. Turner’s blog, Health in the Global Village, provides regular updates on medical travel and globalization of health care.

This Canadian citizen’s research addresses ethical and social issues related to transnational medical travel and the emergence of a global marketplace in health services, but it makes no mention of the detailed vetting and credentialing done by organizations such as Mercury Healthcare International, that follow strict protocols established by several accrediting bodies, perform primary source verification and negotiate recourse into their provider agreements.

By her own admission, Turner has only been researching medical tourism from a purely academic perspective for the last 5 years - and perhaps has just not been able to perform the exhaustive research into examples available or keep up with  real world examples, at the pace the industry is evolving.

Medical Tourism Hogwash Scare Tactics

Medical Tourism Hogwash Scare Tactics | Medical Tourism and Patient Safety | Scoop.it

This treatise by the University of Minnesota was written by an unidentified author, posted as factual and poorly written and researched.

It makes no mention of the detailed vetting and credentialing done by organizations such as Mercury Healthcare International, that follow strict protocols established by several accrediting bodies, perform primary source verification and negotiate recourse into their provider agreements.

Further it makes no mention of the numerous insurance policies currently sold to cover any medical tourism complications from Custom Assurance, US Risk, Chartis, and Seven Corners available for a fraction of the cost of the medical tourism package sold.

Finally, it discusses continuity of care without having researched any of the current day continuity of care infrastructure such as globally integrated electronic health records (rocket science to some US medical practices) the world's only global implant registry, and use of RAND Health outcomes measurement and monitoring tools currently the standard procedure and up and running by organizations like Mercury Healthcare International, which have bridged managed care practices with health travel and medical tourism.

The article was written as if to besmirch the medical tourism sector as a whole, or to echo posts of other authors who had similar unfamiliarity with the state of the sector and where it is going.  Shame Shame!
