How important is the Social in TV? UK'S First Social Media Census 2011

How important is the Social in TV? UK'S First Social Media Census 2011 | MediaSync | Scoop.it

Here's an intereresting summary of the first-ever UK Social Media Census conducted in March of this year, to coincide with the UK’s official census, which was commissioned by UK PR consultancy Lansons and carried out by Opinium Research. The study asked people how, if at all, they use social media.

Key research findings include:

61% of UK adults use social media
Social media use by age ranges from 87% for under 20s and 20s to 28% for over 70s
Clearly with the uptake and usage by the UK Baby Boomers - and in contrary to popular belief - social media usage is high amongst older generations - who are, retiring in droves now and also the most significant demographic driving linear TV viewing up as they have more free time. Almost a third of over 70s (28%) and more than a third of over 60s (39%) represent a significant target market. So they are not only sitting behind the TV - that's clear.

Television: Warner Bros.’ Content Machine

Television: Warner Bros.’ Content Machine | MediaSync | Scoop.it

You’ve heard it a million times, “Content is King.” Sure, some people will argue, others will demote content to Queen status or note the importance of other elements, but at the end of the day it is all semantics. I think everyone realizes the importance of content, forget the ‘rankings.’
The importance of content was highlighted in a piece that ran in The Wall St. Journal on Friday. Called “Hollywood’s TV Factory,” the piece lays out how the studio most famous for movies like Casablanca, Rebel without a Cause and more recent hits like Million Dollar Baby has a more pedestrian profit center: cranking out hit television shows. In fact, Warner Bros. completely dominates the small screen. Take a look at this chart laying out the number of TV shows in production at the Big Six studios:
