Visit the link for more on these seven ways brands are using social media to increase customer loyalty this year.

James Jandebeur's curator insight, March 16, 2014 9:59 AM

According to Facebook's news page, the service has 1.23 billion active users, a little over 20% of the population of the world. Twitter has around 200 million. These services, or something like them, have become increasingly important in our lives, influencing the news media and a variety of public decision making processes. Between a need for security and utility, we need to start learning, then teaching, then learning some more, how to best use social media, and classrooms are not the only place where this needs to be done.

How To Moderate Social Media

How To Moderate Social Media | Médias sociaux pour le développement | Scoop.it
When you throw a dinner party, you dream of excellent company, good food, and constant conversation. Social media managers strive for the same thing.

The World Editor’s Forum recently published a guide and study on the area of comment moderation. This guide concludes with six pointers for publishers to “promote respectful dialogue and conversation rather than uncivil rants and insults, and allow intelligent, thoughtful input to shine”. So what exactly are these pointers?

More details at the link.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, March 29, 2014 5:37 AM

If conversations are the new social currency we've got some tools, guidelines and social mores to create. Online conversations are a tad on the wild west side yet, but trolls and spam can't support themselves for long.

The cost any network built on conversations incurs to rid itself of spam and trolls could kill the golden goose. Community and social "policing" and hoping the good guys math is always just a little faster is the hope conversation based "dinner parties" depend on as roughly described in this "how to moderate" social media post shares.

By moderating we see what we already knew - mobile is different. Mobile requires maps, games and PICTURES.

Taylor Roy's curator insight, April 29, 2014 1:34 PM

We've made such incredible progress with technology over the past 10 years. This chart in the article shows the percentages of the platform that online content is used on. It starts with photos. only 8% of time with photos is spent on a desktop, while the other 92% are using their phone. From here, the mobile percentage decreases while the desktop increases. However we see platforms like maps, games, weather, and social networking being over 50% on mobile. The desktop percentage starts to be over 50% on online content like retail, entertainment news, business/finance, news, health information, and portals. While these are mostly used on a desktop, it doesn't mean that they are not used on mobile devices. Every piece of online content has a percentage of over 25% used on mobile devices.

The simple fact that Youtube viewers surpass any cable network is a solid proof of the growth in social media. (Youtube is not on this graph).

A useful graph to zoom in different networks and how to use each.

Ammanda Daniher's curator insight, September 7, 2014 11:20 PM

With social media continuing to be a rapidly growing industry, many businesses and people are reaching out to different social media sites in order to promote themselves. Not only has social media become addictive to all age groups, it has also become a great place to get messages across to millions or even billions of people at once. However, this is not always a good thing, as all types of messages are able to spread across the internet like wild fire. Just like any other addictive drug, social media has to ability to grasp and change someone's life in an extremely short period of time.

If you’ve ever wondered exactly how sites like Mashable get some much social traction, this might just help give you a little insight into it, and to be honest, it’s not an art, it’s a science, knowing post by post exactly what gets the most sharability per post…

From this Infographic, you’ll see that your optimal time to post new content, is when both the US and Europe are awake, that human interest/watercooler type content is by far the most popular content to share, with Images and Video being key, but it’s value depends on the social network.

Georgia Civil Society 2.0: Rapid assessment & training report | Technology & Social Change Group

Georgia Civil Society 2.0: Rapid assessment & training report | Technology & Social Change Group | Médias sociaux pour le développement | Scoop.it

How are Georgian civil society organizations using social media to engage citizens, spark change, and shift public policy? A rapid assessment conducted as part of the Georgia Civil Society 2.0 project found that most organizations use social media, especially Facebook. However use is often not guided by strategy, mostly characterized by one-way broadcasting, and there is low awareness of limitations and risks. We recommend assessing the Networked Nonprofit model, creating more “edible evidence”, and using new media to weave networks — with free agents as well as with other organizations. We also suggest supporting innovation spaces (especially those connected to public libraries), promoting a DIY/hacker/maker ethic, and nurturing connections with the open source community. Finally, better articulating the project’s theory of change and establishing benchmarks will enable the project to advance knowledge in this field.
