Valuable insight for those interested in seeing how news curation and editor's choice approaches in journalism can benefit both the publisher and its audience a lot more than simply picking and aggregating interesting stories from other sites.

One key relevant difference between aggregating news stories from other sources and editorially curated content is the role of the curator, a tangible person with specific value and ethics who readers come to respect, identify with and ultimately trust for his / her choices in what they should be paying attention to.

"Editors could become curators, cultivating the best work from both inside and outside the newsroom. 
We can form a relationship with a good curator, sometimes even a two-way relationship when we can use social networks to start a conversation with them at any moment.

Curation and trust may indeed form the basis of a new symbiotic relationship between information seekers and subject-matter expert curators that will gradually displace the value of traditional algorithmic search.

"...some have even predicted that the future of finding content on the web will be through editorial curation, not search engine optimization.

In 2013, Brittany Botti, co-founder and social lead of the digital marketing agency Outspective wrote, “In the future, people will look to other people instead of algorithms to find what they are looking for.”

As I said, I've seen many pieces on curation but if you're like me, everytime I read about this, I always find something new or am reminded of ways I can polish what I'm doing.

This is a really good article about content curation. There is nothing wrong with doing content curation, as it provides insight from multiple sources. As this article points out, the trick is curating content that adds value to whatever it is that you are adding the content to. In my case, it's my blog. I've followed most of these guidelines instinctively, because I want to provide quality information to share with fellow technical communicators and e-learning specialists. 


Read this one carefully, as it's chock full of good advice.

**I would hire an editor and a few journalists. And then I’d go out and find every blog, twitter, facebook, flickr, youtube, and other social media feed out there that is related to downtown NYC


**and I would pull it all into an aggregation system where my editor and journalists could cull through the posts coming in, curate them, and then publish them

I’m sure a lot of you guys have looked into curation software available ...

Obviously with the radically different price points they all do different things, but here’s the gist – a whole lot of this you can do for free.


Step OneDefine your Parameters

Define your parameters by where you want the goods to go. Make sure everything is accessible from the beginning so you can leverage your curated content efficiently from the start.

Step TwoChoose your Weapons

e.g.; G+ and FB


Step ThreeBe Intentional with your Schedule

I can’t speak to your industry/niche but I can tell you that when I do my curation at somewhere between 6 and 8am EST I find a goldmine of posts that are brand-flipping-new


Step FourBe Crazy Time Sensitive

I make sure to only curate content that is timely [less than 1% of the time curate something more than 24 hours old]

Open up a google search and type in “content marketing” at the beginning of my day, and set it to the last 24 hours.


Step FiveBe Consistent

As long as you are curating the same general stuff over and over it will work for you.

Notice: Steps 1-5 are all about the setup or protocol. Steps 6-9 are the actual daily work.


Step SixPrepare for Battle

Open windows to the following places:

Google search
WP dashboard to my curation site
Google +
I also have a Word document open


Step SevenGet Rolling

e.g. search for the term “content marketing” in the last 24 hours as shown above; grab 5 or 6 posts that are relevant and make tweets about them and put them on timely/buffer/scoopit


Step EightNatural Overflow

Doing twitter first thing after curation is great, if you have the time.

20-30 minutes after you have your automated posts in place to interact with your feed, clean out the spam tweeps, follow back the real people, etc.


Step NineUse what you Learn

Use your curation is as the basis for your own blogs

Not regurgitation, but rather letting your new-found knowledge fuel your next post. Or, add to the list of blog ideas you have on a running list somewhere.


Setting aside this 45 minutes a day to get the most relevant pieces of content your industry has to offer can not only fill your feeds, but it can also fuel your entire day. And it should, because you should be talking about the latest things in your industry.

Some great tips. Would you also spend the time commenting on the curated posts? I know there are some who believe that it is a necessity and others who feel there is no need as you are merely helping others to filter the noise. I try to mix it up depending on time available.

This is one of those gems that I love to share. It was written by Gideon Rosenblatt in response to an earlier article written by Eli Pariser, "The Filter Bubble", which is about the way algorithms (based on our personal searches) affect the results that are returned to us, as a result, we're not seeing the whole picture.


"Computer algorithms aren't the only thing contributing to the 'Internet Filter Bubble."


**In the world of the information networker, curating content is only half the game. The other half is curating the curators.


**In that power to choose our connections, rests our ultimate power to reshape our information filter bubbles and radically improve our perception of reality.


**Who we choose to connect with in our social networks deeply affects our ability to see a diversity of information.  


My takeaway from this is that whereas technology may restrict the results returned to us by search engines, the other, and perhaps more important half of the equation is controlled by us!  It is well documented that we are more likely to influenced by our circle of friends and associates than by anything else that we may find (or that may find us!). 


By effectively curating our circles of influence, we increase the value of this ever important means of discovery and therefore of our entire online experience. 


**This in turn can make us far more effective and informative curators, when we widen our own circles.

Yes Jan... I don't know exactly what you are referring to, but this the only sure thing we have today: this is time of fast and continuous change... so I am certainly enjoying the ride.

On another note: I would humbly suggest to consider posting shorter stories, especially when you are also pointing to the original, as what I am looking for from you, is not a rehash of what's in the article - outside of a 1-3 para excerpt - but the reasons why you are recommending it. You are already doing both, but it is overwhelming for me. Too much stuff, and I haven't even seen the original yet.

I would also gently mute some of the visual noise you create by heavily formatting with asterisks, bolds and big font sizes. In my case that doesn't help much. It actually hinders my ability to rapidly scan and check whether you have something good there.

I suggest to limit greatly the formatting options you use and to highlight only what is really relevant, because when too many things are highlighted, bolded, asterisked, none has any more an effect on me. It's like a crowd screaming: who do you help? :-)

Content Curators Will Be The New Great (Specialized) Newspapers [Video]

Robin Good: John McCarus, SVP for Brand Content at Digitas, ignites an interesting panel about content creation vs content curation.


This is the second in a series of three videos highlighting a 2012 conversation on the future of media on the social web organized by Ben Elowitz, CEO of Wetpaint.

The nicely edited video, brings up in its four minutes, some valuable takes and opinions on how curation is perceived, used and modulated to achieve different results and objectives.


From mere republishing and copying of someone else materials without attribution or credit (certainly not something to be categorized under "curation") to the new cadre of emerging journalists, who not only write, but also monitor, research, pre-digest and cull the most interesting content - not written by them - for their own audiences.

Curators Key Requirement: Critical Thinking

Robin Good: Critical thinking is a key strategic skill needed by any serious professional curator. 


"Critical thinking provides the keys for our own intellectual independence..." and it helps to move away from "rashy conclusions, mystification and reluctance to question received wisdom, authority and tradition" while learning how to adopt "intellectual discipline" and a way to express clearly ideas while taking personal responsibility for them.

SHARING is a key part of this web social economy we are living in right now. It started with content, (message boards, blogs) and now has moved on to cars (Zipcar), bikes (Citi Bike) and beds (AirBnB). 

We are becoming more connected than ever before and OUR online profiles, that WE and OTHERS create about US is driving this sharing economy.

Agree Brian. When SHARING is at the core many things change such as: competition, how we scale, how we make money and how and what we support.

In a social sharing time we compete in a more collaborative way where rising tides lift all boats. I was shocked to be in a meeting the other day where someone was pithing the idea of unilateral zero sum benefit. Shocked because everyone I work with get it - that doing the right thing is increasingly the right thing to do. I wasn't going to convince this particular manager that WE are stronger than I or ME, but most of us are getting it and that is one of the things driving's success :).M

Robin Good: In the age of global, collective and crowdsourced interaction, many among us are starting to play the role of "connectors". We help like-minded people find each other, or good and complementary ideas to meet halfway. 


Here is an interesting take from Nick Kellet on the possible different types of "connectors" out there, among which he identifies also a "solution connector", or someone able to pull together different information, resources and ideas to tell a story or to cover an issue/topic like a museum curator would do.

Giuseppe Mauriello: This is my “scoop” article for today. I found this article written by Suw Charman-Anderson in November of 2006 from her first professional blog “Strange Attractor”,  now permanently moved to


Suw is journalist, social technologist consultant and writer, one of the UK’s social media pioneers. 

Returning to her article... the author describes the scenario of the digital industry at the time (2006), then she raises some interesting  points about the need of content curation and the importance of the curator role. Here are some gems excerpted from it:

We already have more movies available than any one person can watch; more videos on YouTube; more blogs… more everything. It’s not like we’re starting from a point of scarcity here. And the flood of stuff is going to turn into a rampaging torrent as more people get online and more people get excited by their ability to participate and create.

In the past, the media acted as gatekeepers.


They were the ones that went to the movie previews…
They were the ones who got the advance copy of the game…
They were the arbiters of taste, the people in the know, the ones with the connections needed to get at culture before us plebs got at it.

But we don’t need gatekeepers anymore. We don’t need people who stand between us and our stuff, deciding what to tell us about and what to ignore. We don’t need arbiters of taste.

We do, however, still need help. There’s just too much stuff around for us to know what’s out there, to keep up with what’s good, what works for us, what is worth investigation. What we need are curators.

We need people who can gather together the things that are of interest to us, things that fit with our tastes or challenge us in interesting ways, things that enrich our lives and help us enjoy our time rather than waste it on searching.

Curators already exist. Some are people: Bloggers who sift through tonnes of stuff in order to highlight what they like, and who, if you have the same taste as them, can be invaluable to discovering new things to like.

But curation of the web has barely started. Much of what you could call curation that exists today is flawed: too many noisy opinions and not enough capacity to understand what I as an individual want…

Steven Rosenbaum has an interesting article on Fast Company, outlining the reasons why curation is here to stay and the importance that curators will play in your information consumption diet.


He writes: "...So anyone who steps up and volunteers to curate in their area of knowledge and passion is taking on a Herculean task.


They're going to stand between the web and their readers, using all of the tools at their disposal to "listen" to the web, and then pull out of the data stream nuggets of wisdom, breaking news, important new voices, and other salient details.


It's real work, and requires a tireless commitment to being engaged and ready to rebroadcast timely material.


While there may be an economic benefit for being a "thought leader" and "trusted curator," it's not going to happen overnight.


Which is to say, being a superhero is often a thankless job.


The growth in content, both in terms of pure volume and the speed of publishing, has raised some questions about what best practices are in the curation space."


He also has some pretty straightforward advice on what, as a curator, you should never do:


"1. If you don't add context, or opinion, or voice and simply lift content, it's stealing.


2. If you don't provide attribution, and a link back to the source, it's stealing.


3. If you take a large portion of the original content, it's stealing.


4. If someone asks you not to curate their material, and you don't respect that request, it's stealing.


5. Respect published rights. If images don't allow creative commons use, reach out to the image creator--don't just grab it and ask questions later."


And he definitely has a point on all of these.

A Curated Introduction To Curation by Andy Dickinson

Robin Good: Here's another good example of curation at work. Andy Dickinson, has used Storify to create a "curated reference" of his lecture about curation for his first year undergraduate students. 


The "storified" reference contains links to tools, video clips, and many contributions which allow any learner interested in this topic, to follow a selected path from which it is possible to wander off and explore in many interesting directions.

I selected this wonderful piece by Michael J. Fern of Intigi because it reinforces the importance of curation and has a lot of great insights.


In this article the author refers to Robert Scoble,who has built an enormous following on several social networks by curating and sharing the latest news about technology and startups.


He says that just like Scobleizer, startups should use curation to catapult their online presence and influence.

By creating a bundle of articles, images, videos or websites that relate to a specific them and keeping it updated, this “guide” can become an important resource for social media marketers.

Using 3rd party articles and adding your own point of view you can build a dedicated following. He refers to Daring Fireball, a blog that has built an impressive loyal following of 30,000

Robin Good: Josh Sternberg at Digiday highlights a trend that is only going to get bigger in the near future: brands, as they realize the increasing need to be active publishers, are recognizing the problems and limitations that this task involves.


"The problem is publishing is a lot harder than it looks, or rather it’s a lot harder to do it with the consistency, day after day, that’s needed to build a long-term audience.


That’s leading some brands to hook onto the idea that their role lies more in the curation of content."


But in choosing this path, the article recommends, brands need to be careful in what and how much they curate. 


Here some valuable advice from the article:

"Brands need to be careful in not only what, but how much they curate.


There can’t be articles that make the reader question why a brand is sharing it.


Also, brands need to make sure they’re not just regurgitating content, but instead offering readers/followers valuable information, as readers will quickly determine the curated content — and thus the brand — is not worth their time.


Since consumers have their own tools for curating – Storify, Storyful, etc. – brands have to know each of their customers and have the credibility in their field to get consumers to trust the content they spread."

Re the class and the channels reviewed these are not visible as this was a paid online course and only the participants got all of the recordings. :-(

The stunningly feminine fan base could be a telling proxy for Pinterest’s actual user base, which totals over 10.4 million considering that’s how many users follow the official “Pinterest” account.


Even though it was co-founded by three men, the site’s not shy about courting women. It’s About page describes that “People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.”


Sure, dudes can do all those things too, but they’re probably not addicted to pinning tuxedos and power tools like women pin brides dresses and bundt cakes. Pinterest’s easy-to-use Pin It bookmarklet and the joy of curation is keeping ladies and gentlemen engaged.


There are so many beautiful things to share, and they don’t deserve to slip into obscurity at the bottom of our Twitter feeds and Facebook profiles. Pinterest gives people the chance to say “I love this, and not just today. This helps define me.”
