Education is a vital part of having a successful career in engineering. Engineers have to be proficient in advanced levels of math, science, and design. It is important that engineers that have the knowledge that they need in these areas before they begin their careers in the engineering field. Students today are expected to be able to produce as soon as they are hired. In order to keep up with the demands for an ever changing industry, the educators must step up to fill these needs.  Recently, educators have been reevaluating their teaching systems so that students will easily be able to fit in to their new careers. This involves a focus on more hands-on work and real world application in their senior years of college, some of which are in cooperation with businesses in the industry.

The American Society of Engineering Education is another authority in the engineering world, much like ASME. The ASEE has been around since 1893 and boasts 12,000 members made up of deans, department heads, students, and government officials. Their focus is to further the education of those in the engineering community by promoting excellence in the education of engineering students. This is done by acting as a link between corporations, institutions and government agencies. As the center point of education in the engineering world, the ASEE proves to be a credible source.

The Effectiveness of Ethics Education: A Quasi-Experimental Field Study - Springer

Ethics is an area of utmost importance in the engineering field. Even though most come up knowing the difference between right and wrong, aspects of the engineering field ask for much more. For example, the access to large sums of money and data calls for a high level of morality to keep from problems such as misappropriation of funds or falsification of data. Engineers must know how to responsibly know how to responsibly conduct their research and have ethical decision-making. If an engineer has a history of misconduct in their career; it will severely damage their reputation. For this reason, engineering students have to take ethics courses before beginning their career.  Due to recent events involving ethics, the effectiveness of ethics courses are being questioned.

 

I believe that Dr. Douglas May is an extremely credible source on the subject of ethics. Dr. May is currently a professor and the director of the International Center for Ethics in Business at the University of Kansas. He has conducted extensive research on ethics education. He has also won many awards for his works on environmental ethics and ethical decision making. Dr. May has taught business ethics from undergraduate to executive levels.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is the top source for information and news in the engineering community. The ASME has published over 600 technological standards that are put in use in over 100 countries.  Having been around since 1880, the society has earned a reputation for providing accurate information. The organization provides certification assessments and accreditation to its members and also houses a collection of books, journals, and articles. Its members are made up of highly regarded experts in several areas of engineering. These members also provide engineering expertise to several government agencies including the White House Office of Science and Technology.

The information provided on their website gives insight into many areas of the engineering community and range from topics such as automobile engineering to ethics. The thousands of articles and journals found on their website have little room for mistakes as they are read over every day by their expert members and contain virtually no biases. The fact that they provide the standards for the engineering community shows that the society has made a great impact that has made them an influential part of the engineering world. The ASME has proven themselves and their members to be highly credible sources that will provide accuracy in anyone’s search for information.

Article : Characterizing Sustainable Mechanical Engineering

Sustainable engineering has recently become a largely focused area of the engineering world. The upcoming of the green movement has brought much needed attention to preserving our environment. Mechanical engineering has never been thought to be the most "earth friendly" practice. This has led engineers to start thinking of new ways to design and manufacture to have a very limited impact on the environment but also be able to produce efficient products. This has brought about new thoughts on things such as nanotechnology and biotechnology. This has also brought a new way of thinking in the area of education. Many have come to the realization that the study of sustainability shouldn't be reserved for only environmental engineers and should be taught to be applied in all engineering disciplines.

 

Dr. Richard Ciocci is currently the program chair of Mechanical Engineering and an Assistant Professor for Penn State Harrisburg. As mechanical engineer he has recently focused his research on the area of sustainability in the mechanical engineering field. His credibility comes from the extensive research and work in this area. Much of his work outside of the education consists of working towards clean manufacturing processes and designs.

The article above is written by Dr. William J. Wepfer, is the Eugene C. Gwaltney Jr. School Chair and Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. In the article he speaks about how to get young students to become interested in the engineering field and the initiatives that the ASME has taken to fix the issue. The decline of young students interested in engineering is a serious problem, especially in an industry that is so important to the functioning of today’s world. There is also a need for diversity in the field which has the led the ASME to start efforts in getting young women and minorities interested in the engineering field. The main goal has been to create a greater since of community in order to help usher students into engineering careers.

 

Dr. Wepfer's credibility on this subject comes from the fact that he has been an educator in the engineering field since he began at GA Tech in 1980. As an educator, he sees the trends in the popularity of engineering firsthand. He is also an AMSE member and drew the information on their initiatives directly from the organization. With him being at such a high place in the engineering community, it is logical that he should be believed when it comes to building it up for future success.
