Caffeine Consumption and Perceptual Response in Sport - The Sport In Mind – Sport Psychology

Caffeine Consumption and Perceptual Response in Sport - The Sport In Mind – Sport Psychology | Sports Doc | Scoop.it

Caffeine is commonly used as an ergogenic aid by many athletes due to the almost unequivocal support in the literature on the beneficial impacts of ingesting caffeine on submaximal performance.  Its effects have been found to improve upon many paradigms including aerobic, anaerobic and muscular strength through the enhancement of both mental and physical performance (Killen et al, 2013).

Studies have shown that, as compared with a placebo, caffeine improved performance by approximately 11%, however, this finding does not extend itself to exercise termination, as this typically coincides with physiological limits such as maximal oxygen consumption or maximal heart rate, which have not been found to be interfered with through the consumption of caffeine (Doherty  Smith, 2005).  The purported mechanisms behind this have spanned from the augmented mobilisation of free fatty acids and associated glycogen sparring, sympathetic nervous system enhancement, reduction in central fatigue, depletion of neuromuscular conduction block and a potentiation of muscular force output for a given input.  However, the results behind these proposed mechanisms remain equivocal, with each lacking consistent support (Doherty & Smith, 2005).

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman isn’t too happy with the Seattle Times after the media outlet published his new home address — which formerly belonged to Clippers guard Jamal Crawford — and said he is now “being bombarded with fans hanging out around his house wanting autographs — or wanting to just hang out,” CBS Seattle reported.

Aldon Smith receives 12-day sentence, probation | Sports Doc | Scoop.it

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was sentenced in a Santa Clara County Superior Court on Friday related to a May no contest plea to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon and two misdemeanor counts of DUI.

A judge sentenced Smith to 12 days in county jail with a one-day credit, according to a court document obtained by NFL Media from public information officer Joseph D. Macaluso. However, that sentence can be served on work crew on Mondays, starting July 28. That would mean Smith would have to show up for work crew the day after some games.

Miami Heat loses LeBron James

Miami Heat loses LeBron James | Sports Doc | Scoop.it

LeBron James made it official Friday, leaving the Heat for his hometown Cavaliers. But Chris Bosh will return with a reported five-year, $118 million deal, and new deals were being worked out for Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem.

James broke the news of his decision to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday with a personal essay published by SI.com.

James’ decision apparently took the Heat by surprise. At the beginning of free agency, many inside the franchise were confident James would stay. Riley famously told anyone who would listen to “get a grip” in a news conference before the start of free agency.

Dan Gilbert, the Cavaliers’ owner who famously called James a “coward” among other things when James left Cleveland for Miami, secretly met with James in Miami last week for several hours, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports. During that meeting, Gilbert and James worked through long-standing differences.

With seven games to play and the Bulls somehow in the hunt for the No. 3 seed in the East without Rose and Deng, Noah is on pace to become the fifth center in league history to average more than 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a season -- the others being Wilt Chamberlain (four times), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (three), Bill Russell (twice) and Bill Walton (twice).

The 'Michael Jordan Of Creatine' Talks Soviet Sports, Steroids And Rugenix

The 'Michael Jordan Of Creatine' Talks Soviet Sports, Steroids And Rugenix | Sports Doc | Scoop.it
Excerpt:
Most of the rumors you heard about how the Soviets ran their Olympic training camps are true. KGB agents were omnipresent at Soviet athletes' practices. The scientists who were evaluating the athletes on a daily basis had to sign over all of their lab work to a KGB agent at the end of every day. Scientists were routinely questioned about who they were sharing their data with and, while on site at an official Soviet Olympic training camp, they were restricted from leaving voluntarily without a personal permit from a high-ranking KGB official.

The Only Six Words Parents Need to Say to Their Kids About Sports—Or Any Performance

The Only Six Words Parents Need to Say to Their Kids About Sports—Or Any Performance | Sports Doc | Scoop.it

I’ll be honest: I kind of hate a lot about kids’ sports. It’s one area where Kara and I hold different opinions. I’m the wet blanket in the office about everything from little league to major sporting events.

Mainly I get concerned about the ways our culture obsesses about kids’ performance. All kinds of parental anxiety and dysfunction plays out on the sidelines and in the bleachers, and you only need walk to your local park to catch a glimpse for yourself. Sports have such potential to build character, perseverance, and skill. Sometimes they succeed, and other times coaches, parents, and mobs of hot-or-cold fans burn out or puff up kids in quite damaging ways.

Report: Bulls renewing push for Love

Report: Bulls renewing push for Love | Sports Doc | Scoop.it

ESPN reports that the Bulls have re-entered the trade talks for Kevin Love and are making a significant push while the Cavaliers keep trying to move forward to acquire the All-Star from the Timberwolves.

Sources say that the Bulls, though, have this re-entered the race and would appear to be the biggest threat to the Cavs, thanks largely to the Golden State Warriors' resolute unwillingness to add longtime Wolves target Klay Thompson in a deal.

Although the full extent of the Bulls' offer wasn't immediately known, it is believed Minnesota would seek a package from Chicago featuring forward Taj Gibson and defensive ace Jimmy Butler in addition to other assets. The Bulls shelved their Love interest while trying to sign Carmelo Anthony away from the New York Knicks but, according to sources, have re-emerged as a contender.

Priefer will serve the suspension during the 2014 regular season. The ban may be reduced to two games if Priefer also attends individualized anti-harassment, diversity and sexual-orientation sensitivity training.

In a Deadspin article written by Kluwe on Jan. 2, the punter accused Priefer of homophobic comments. Kluwe also alleged that he was released due to his activism for marriage equality rather than performance
