The Mazda CX5

MarineAllain's insight:

The Mazda CX5 has very quickly established itself as one of the most popular SUV’s in Australia. It arrived as a replacement for the short lived brand of the CX 7 in 2012 and has proven itself to be a formidable seller. In 2013 a new 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol model was added to the CX 5 lineup. This has added a great deal to the range as many experts felt the 2 litre four-cylinder petrol model was underpowered with an automatic transition transmission which struggled with the resulting lack of torque.

When comparing the new 2.5 litre model to the old 2.0 litre, the important improvements in performance are very obvious. Initially, many have found that during low revs a driver still has to push through some resistance in the pedal, which is not seen in lighter Mazda models such as the Mazda 6. However, after this initial impression the extra 22% power and 26% torque becomes obvious.

Whether you are dealing with steep inclines or attempting to overtake another vehicle, the new 2.5 litre CX 5 delivers sufficient power and enthusiasm, where the old 2.0 litre would have struggled. The six speed automatic gearbox is also complemented well in this new model. It now appears able to hold the gears, rather than flitting between changing up and changing down. This contributes to the smooth and satisfying engine notes which are usually associated with a Mazda. The figures also indicate that this model is an entire second faster from 0 to100 km per hour in comparison to the 2.0 litre.

Of course, the CX 5 is still available in diesel models. The 2.2 litre turbodiesel provides the fastest 0 to100 km/h rate at 8.0 seconds with fantastic fuel efficiency of 5.7 litres per hundred kilometres.

The 2.5 litrepetrol will of course be anticipated to use more fuel than the old 2.0 litre model. Official figures quote 7.4 litres per 100 km, which is almost half a litre more than the old model. This bigger engine is still capable of running on regular unleaded which could mitigate some of the costs against the old 2.0 litres.

Aesthetically, the cabin in the CX 5 continues to provide quality and style in its design. It is more spacious than the old CX 7 providing ample space for head and leg room, even in the rear seats. It also has a boot space of approximately 400 litres, with a variety of storage options to accommodate all those smaller items within the cabin. Although the boot is smaller than you would find in some comparable models, the Mazda CX 5 can still comfortably accommodate a pram in the boot and the rear seats can fold flat completely to allow potential space of over 1500 litres.

Many experts are rejoicing this edition to the CX 5 lineup, as it now offers a strong range without any weak links. If you are interested in purchasing a petrol SUV, the 2.5 litre CX 5 certainly deserves serious consideration.
