How to Teach Internet Safety to Younger Elementary Students

How to Teach Internet Safety to Younger Elementary Students | EDCI280 | Scoop.it
Mary Beth Hertz (@mbteach on Twitter) is an elementary computer teacher in Philadelphia, PA and a regular blogger on Edutopia. You can read more of her work on her own blog at Philly-teacher.
Meagan Campbell's insight:

Teaching internet safety to children is vital in this day and age and I think the idea of starting as early as kindergarten is important. When I was in 5th and 6th grade I, along with my peers, were always online with little to no parental supervision. That was about 7 years ago, and technology is even more ingrained in society today. The 7 year old girl I babysit already has an Instagram!

10 Steps for Avoiding Teacher Burnout

10 Steps for Avoiding Teacher Burnout | EDCI280 | Scoop.it
"Why did I want to be a teacher?" We all face burnout, sometimes on a daily basis, and in my case, especially after fourth period. Most of the time, we can pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, an
Meagan Campbell's insight:

I think this is important for teachers as well as students. If you are tired and not working to full capacity, it is not only detrimental to your health and well being, but your students also suffer from not having a teacher operating at full capacity.

Meagan Campbell's insight:

This is great! Nowadays it seems everyone is a bit app- crazy; why not use it to our advantage in the classroom? I especially like the idea of using iMovie in the classroom, this could be a great tool to spark creativity and critical thinking skills early on.

Meagan Campbell's insight:

I think being able to effectively teach math is really important. In school, I have always struggled with math, but perhaps if math was more integrated in all subjects it would be much easier to learn and apply to every day life.

Meagan Campbell's insight:

I believe it is crucial to implement good teaching strategies for English Language Learners. In the classroom I have seen how frustrating it is to grasp new material, and it is much more difficult to grasp material in a language foreign to your own. This article has some great strategies for teaching English Language Learners.

Teach teachers how to create magic

Teach teachers how to create magic | EDCI280 | Scoop.it
What do rap shows, barbershop banter and Sunday services have in common? As Christopher Emdin says, they all hold the secret magic to enthrall and teach at the same time — and it’s a skill we often don't teach to educators. The science advocate (and cofounder of Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. with the GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan) offers a vision to make the classroom come alive.
Meagan Campbell's insight:

I love this speaker and agree with many of the points he brings up. Many teachers are taught old, outdated theories. In the classroom, teachers engagement with students is crucial. But can we really learn in a classroom environment how to properly engage students? Or does it involve going out of the classroom and observing people in the real world?

Meagan Campbell's insight:

I think a huge part of my responsibility as a teacher is looking out for bullying. I remember how negatively it affected me when I was younger and how detrimental it was to my learning in school, and I wouldn't want any of my students to feel the same way.

Change is always happening. Are we even aware of the change and what that means? Just saying we want innovation and creativity does make it so. Look at education. For all the talk of change, it looks remarkably the same with new technology, but largely the same.
